Living in an apartment smaller than a standard living room seems impossible. But what if these modest square meters can accommodate everything you need for a comfortable life? The story of this tiny studio is direct proof that even 23 square meters can become a full-fledged and stylish home.
Japanese style
Loft
This is a “combination of the incompatible.” That is, the entire design is based on contrasts; the loft is characterized by roughness and, at the same time, ease. If your walls are light in color, the furniture should be dark. Abundant spot lighting is welcome. This style is best suited for the living room.

“This is a striking example of maximizing the potential of minimal space,” says the project's author. "Linear graphics and rhythms form the structural basis of the studio apartment's design. The overlapping function of each detail transforms the interior into a single organism, where all elements are logically connected to each other.
The concept of integrated and multifunctional solutions works particularly well in such compact studios. In addition, this type of interior is accessible to young people both in terms of budget and in terms of implementing modern ideas in interior design.
The kitchen is separated from the bedroom by a zoning partition made of vertical slats. A low apron is attached to it to prevent debris from falling from the work area. A structural anchor is provided for attaching the slats under the stretch ceiling. Natural light from a large window shines through the slats, flooding the studio with light during the day, even on cloudy days.
The kitchen set is custom-made. Built-in appliances include a dishwasher, washing machine, four-burner hob, oven, and convenient sink. The narrow part of the kitchen countertop on the right serves as an additional work surface with storage and acts as a reliable base for the partition between the kitchen and the bedroom. The countertop transitions into an integrated dining table, with a bedside table built into the lower part.
The upper kitchen modules extend to the ceiling, providing a cohesive geometry to the space and maximum storage capacity. The work surface is spacious and can accommodate a kettle and microwave. Three materials and colors were used in the design: light milky facades in the lower bases, a medium cappuccino tone in the countertop, transitioning into the apron. The composition is completed by a darker horizontal walnut texture. The accent detail of this understated kitchen is an open asymmetrical niche with a graphically highlighted edge line, glass shelves, and lighting.
The refrigerator is integrated into the niche next to the worktop and continues the unified line of the hallway layout. This solution was planned during the design phase. Moving the refrigerator has made the kitchen more spacious and concise. Built-in custom-made furniture allows you to quickly tidy up. Storage space has been provided with room for future expansion.
The studio was sold with a finished interior, so we decided to repaint the walls and replace the laminate flooring with quartz vinyl, a quiet, moisture-resistant covering. The ceilings are matte stretch ceilings with built-in lighting, the layout of which was clearly linked to the furniture arrangement.
The color scheme of the project is northern and natural. Calm colors in the background surfaces with small inclusions of natural gray-green shades and delicate peach. The texture of concrete, deep gray shades, reflective surfaces, copper accessories, and textured rugs bring variety to the environment. The rhythm of the vertical elements balances the proportions of the space, while dark graphite creates contrast.
There are various lighting scenarios. The top features built-in spotlights for basic diffused lighting. Local lighting includes a pendant lamp in the center of the table and a sconce on the panel in the bedside area. The lighting of the kitchen work surface from under the upper cabinets helps the hostess while cooking. The lighting built into the open kitchen niche creates a pleasant atmosphere.
"The bed is equipped with a storage container and fits into the niche. The mattress is 140 cm wide and, according to the owners, is quite comfortable for two young people of slim build.
Opposite the bed, we placed a TV that is convenient to watch, all thanks to the wall panel. A soft panel is also provided at the head of the bed. The headboard is located in a niche formed by a tabletop with a built-in bedside table," says Anna Smolyakova.
In the living room area, we have provided a small cabinet by the window with shelves and space for a TV, plus a small sofa seat that can accommodate three guests. Under the seat, we have designed spacious pull-out drawers with recessed handles.
The gray panel with a concrete texture behind the TV echoes the color of the cabinet and the sideboard in the hallway. To the right of the TV, there is a comfortable work desk with vertical slats on the wall. The hanging shelf above the desk is highlighted in dark graphite for contrast. It is comfortable to sit here in a soft work chair at a laptop — in case of remote work.
The hallway closet is custom-made and consists of three modules: two modules for storing items on rods and shelves, and the third module for storing household items. The utility module is wide enough to accommodate a stepladder, ironing board, folding clothes dryer, iron, vacuum cleaner, bucket, basin, and all cleaning supplies. The two mirrored central doors of the wardrobe dissolve its large volume and make it airy.
In the bathroom, the shower stall and sink with mirror were replaced. The neutral white tile finish on the walls from the developer was not changed, as it fits well with the modern style of the interior.
Layout
This tiny studio is a great example of how even 23 square meters can be turned into a comfortable and functional living space. The key to success is not in the number of square meters, but in their smart organization. Every centimeter here works for the owner.
The main conclusion is simple: a small area is not a sentence, but an interesting challenge for the designer and the resident themselves. It teaches us to appreciate functionality, get rid of the unnecessary, and think outside the box. Order and thoughtfulness become a natural part of everyday life.
Such a space proves that for a happy life, it is not the size of the apartment that matters, but how well it meets your needs and reflects your character.
