How to properly glue non-woven wallpaper?

Non-woven wallpaper is a popular option for both novice and seasoned do-it-yourselfers because it can be easily applied and transformed into a new space with little work. Non-woven wallpaper, in contrast to traditional wallpaper, has the advantage of being easier to apply and more durable due to its blend of natural and synthetic fibers. If you’re thinking about painting your walls a new color, mastering the proper methods for adhering non-woven wallpaper is crucial to getting a polished result.

It’s critical to gather all required tools and materials before you begin. The following tools are required: a level, a bucket, a sponge, a wallpaper brush or roller, a utility knife, a smoothing tool, and a seam roller. Additionally, make sure you have the appropriate wallpaper adhesive—usually recommended by the wallpaper manufacturer. Everything should be prepared in advance to ensure a more efficient and seamless process.

The secret to a successful wallpapering project is preparation. Make sure your walls are smooth, dry, and clean before starting. Sand down any uneven areas, seal any cracks, and remove any outdated wallpaper. Using an appropriate primer on your walls can also improve the wallpaper’s adhesion. The wallpaper will adhere correctly and have a beautiful appearance if the wall is properly prepared.

The first step in applying wallpaper is to measure and cut the wallpaper strips. To allow for trimming, it’s a good idea to give each strip a few extra centimeters. Using a roller, apply the adhesive directly to the wall—not the wallpaper—for even coverage. Place the wallpaper strip on the wall with caution, smoothing it down to eliminate wrinkles and air bubbles from top to bottom. Press the wallpaper firmly against the wall using a smoothing tool.

If your wallpaper has designs, repeat this process with each subsequent strip, being careful to match the patterns. For a seamless appearance, press the edges together using a seam roller. Using a sharp utility knife, trim any extra wallpaper from the edges for a neat finish. Lastly, use a damp sponge to remove any leftover adhesive before it dries.

Gluing non-woven wallpaper can be an easy and satisfying do-it-yourself project if you follow these instructions. You can accomplish a stunning, long-lasting result by taking your time and being meticulous. Have fun with the décor!

Step Instructions
1 Prepare the walls: clean, smooth, and dry.
2 Measure and cut the wallpaper strips.
3 Apply adhesive to the wall, not the wallpaper.
4 Align the first strip at the top of the wall.
5 Smooth the strip from top to bottom to remove air bubbles.
6 Trim excess wallpaper at the edges.
7 Repeat for additional strips, matching the pattern.

What is non-woven wallpaper

The multi-layer non-woven material known as non-woven wallpaper is composed of 30% binders and 70% modified cellulose fibers, with the latter also containing polyester fiber additives.

This kind of material has high tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and fire resistance compared to plain paper. It looks like white or yellowish paper, feels like elastic fabric to the touch, and has a fiberglass-like structure.

Non-woven fabric can be used in trellis production in conjunction with paper and vinyl wallpaper materials. They are also referred to as non-woven wallpaper in daily life. However, these are distinct kinds of wallpaper:

  • non-woven vinyl wallpaper;
  • wallpaper for painting, where the bottom layer is non-woven, the top is paper.

Classic wallpaper is smooth, light, and composed entirely of non-woven fabric. We’ll talk about them below.

Advantages and disadvantages

The benefits of non-woven wallpaper are numerous:

  • have a huge number of design solutions;
  • durable, thanks to which they have a long service life;
  • have high moisture resistance, which allows you to wet clean not only the floor, but also the walls (can be washed using special products);
  • do not absorb odors;
  • dense, easily hide minor imperfections on the wall surface (microcracks, roughness);
  • vapor-permeable, which makes it possible to paste them on any premises (hallway, children"s room, bathroom, etc.).d.);
  • environmentally friendly;
  • do not support combustion with an open flame (have a high level of fire safety);
  • elastic – stretch when the glued surface is deformed (shrinkage, formation of microcracks, etc.).d.), which is important for newly built houses;
  • do not fade under the influence of ultraviolet rays;
  • easy to remove for replacement;
  • technological:
  1. applying glue to the wall greatly simplifies the pasting process (sheets of wallpaper do not get wet from the adhesive mass, which makes it easy to join them and adjust the pattern);
  2. can be glued to any base (concrete, cement and gypsum plaster or putty, wood, drywall);
  3. having a width of 1.06 m (standard for Russia), they reduce the number of seams, which reduces the time for gluing trellises to the wall;

Additionally, there are drawbacks:

  • high price (cost of 1 roll is about 1.0 thousand. rub., which makes them unattainable when renovating an entire apartment for people with low incomes);
  • transparency – even the inscription on the plasterboard can be seen through them, not to mention the color spots on the wall;
  • retain traces of glue that gets on the front side.

Surface preparation

The extent to which a wall is prepared before applying contemporary wallpaper greatly influences the wallpaper’s longevity and quality. This mostly pertains to non-woven trellises, though amateurs frequently hold the opinion that they can be adhered to outdated wallpaper.

This method is feasible from a technological standpoint because non-woven fabric is lightweight and will always adhere to old trellises with glue. However, from an aesthetic perspective, this finishing option is unfeasible because, unless the prior wallpaper was monochromatic and light in color, the old pattern will be very evident through the freshly pasted sheets.

The article "How to prepare walls for wallpapering" goes into great detail about the entire wallpapering process. Let’s review the topics that were covered there in brief.

Prior to adding wallpaper to an apartment, the following tasks must be completed in order:

  • clean the walls of old finishes and, if necessary, plaster;
  • repair formed microcracks, peelings, cavities, etc.d.;
  • prime the surface;
  • level uneven walls with cement-sand or dry (plasterboard, plywood, etc.).d.) plaster;
  • putty the surface of the plaster;
  • treat the surface on which the trellises are glued with a primer.

Tools and materials

The following items need to be in the workspace before gluing non-woven wallpaper:

  • rolls of non-woven trellises;
  • specialized wallpaper glue for non-woven fabric;
  • plumb line or laser level;
  • tape measures at 3 m;
  • rules;
  • wide metal spatula;
  • a knife with a removable blade;
  • a simple pencil;
  • hand towels;
  • ditches for glue or a special mesh for removing excess glue from the roller if it is dipped into a container with glue;
  • a lint roller (foam roller applies glue unevenly to the wall);
  • a rubber roller for rolling out wallpaper (you can use a special plastic spatula for trellises);
  • cone-shaped roller for processing joints;
  • foam sponges;
  • plastic bucket for clean water.

Correct markings will help you hang wallpaper neatly, evenly and beautifully the first time – the vertical line will be the guideline for gluing the first strip. To build it without deviations and errors, you will need a laser level. This tool allows even an inexperienced user to make clear, professional markings at home with a minimum of effort. For example, the Rokodil Ray Pro self-leveling level is capable of projecting 12 lines in different planes at 360 degrees. It works with a minimum error of only 0.2 mm/m; there is a plumb point to transfer marks from the floor to the ceiling. The green laser beam is perfectly visible in sunny weather, has 5 brightness adjustment modes. The model is suitable for all types of work. When operating from the built-in battery, autonomy will be more than 10 hours; operation from the network is also provided. Tool warranty 5 years.

There are a few essential steps in correctly adhering non-woven wallpaper that guarantee a durable and flawless finish. Make sure the walls are smooth, dry, and clean before beginning. Using a roller or brush, apply a premium wallpaper adhesive directly to the wall—not the wallpaper. After carefully aligning the wallpaper at the top, remove any air bubbles by using a brush or sponge to smooth the material down. Cut off any extra using a sharp knife. By taking your time, you can create a gorgeously finished wall that will elevate any space.

Preparing wallpaper

Finishing materials are bought once each room’s wallpaper type, color, and pattern have been decided upon in order to fit into the apartment’s overall interior design scheme. In order to avoid running into issues with different shades in different wallpaper rolls, it is crucial to take all the tubes of one article and one change of release.

Quantity calculation

You cannot use specific tables that indicate how many tubes are needed based on the room’s perimeter and ceiling height to determine how many rolls are needed for repairs because non-woven wallpaper has a different width.

First, the area of the walls must be calculated (the wall’s length multiplied by its height, and the results added together). The area of window and door openings is deducted from the final result. One roll’s area is divided by the resultant number.

One tube has a surface area of 10.6 m2 and measures 10×1.06 m. Nonetheless, professionals divide by 10 and disregard the indicator’s decimal value. Add one roll for pasting corners, door, and window openings to the final result, and one tube for every six rolls if the pattern needs to be adjusted.

Glue preparation

The type of glue used directly affects the strength and aesthetic appeal of non-woven wallpaper wall décor. He needs to:

  • have good clutch with trellis;
  • It is divorced to a thick consistency, which allows you to apply it with a thin layer without subtexts;
  • Do not leave traces when drying out – do not turn yellow.

Such requirements can only be met by specialized glue; even light non-woven trellis is universal. Note that there are two kinds of specialty glue: one for light wallpaper and another for heavy wallpaper.

Be aware that vinyl trellises with a non-woven base are a representation of heavy trellises. As a result, we are limited to discussing klee in relation to light (pure non-woven) wallpaper types here.

Which glue to choose

A vast array of brands of non-woven wallpaper adhesive are available on the shelves of construction stores. However, it is preferable to purchase promoted brands because there is a dearth of trustworthy information regarding the quality attributes of unknown brands.

"Flezelin Moment." The least expensive glue from well-known brands, which comes in 250 g packaging for 200 rubles and 500 g packaging for 399 rubles, is Russian in origin. Appropriate for all kinds of non-woven wallpaper, including thick vinyl.

Enables smooth wallpaper sheet sliding along the wall when joining. includes anti-mold and anti-mildew additives. Keeps diluted for up to 7 days in storage. Nevertheless, it also has drawbacks:

  • Dilutes poorly – it is difficult to obtain a homogeneous mass;
  • not suitable for trellises with a three-dimensional pattern – requires dense rolling, which cannot be done with a rubber roller on textured wallpaper (a wallpaper spatula cannot provide such force).

"Ultra Premium Methylane Interlining". product of the renowned Henkel company in Germany. Its composition of methylcellulose and natural resins ensures that non-woven wallpaper of any kind will adhere to a variety of surfaces, including brick, plasterboard, concrete, and cork. Divorce is simple.

When it enters the front side, it leaves no trace. One important feature about it is that it dries quickly, so you have to dilute it to a thinner consistency than what the package says. The price range is in the middle; a 250 g pack costs 290 rubles. 500 g packaging costs 535 rub, and up to 350 rub.

"Special non-woven fabric from Quelyd." crafted in France. Out of all the brands of adhesive for non-woven wallpaper, its price is the highest (450 g package starts at 360 rubles). But the cost is exactly right for the quality; expert finishers think it’s the best way to glue trellises.

  • perfectly holds light and heavy wallpaper, with a smooth and voluminous pattern;
  • easy to divorce;
  • does not smell;
  • does not flow down the wall during spreading;
  • leaves no traces when contacted with the front side, etc.d.

The "PUFAS" range of non-woven wallpaper adhesives (available in five varieties) offers improved adhesion between the wall surface and the trellises. Its color indicator makes it easier to distribute; leaving anything out is prohibited. You can select a product for a particular type of wallpaper when buying glue from this brand: smooth, corrugated, light, or heavy.

Furthermore, we can suggest "FliziLex," "Exclusive Non-Woven," and "Kleo Non-Woven."

How to calculate the number of glue packs

One crucial aspect of glue for non-woven trellises is that the glue’s consumption is stated on the packaging in terms of wall area in square meters rather than the quantity of wallpaper rolls. As a result, the computation is carried out somewhat differently.

Ascertain first the area of the walls that need to be covered. The obtained result is then divided by the packaging’s stated consumption in milliseconds (m²). The outcome is tallied.

How to divorce

To thin the required amount of glue:

  • 10-12 liter capacity (plastic bucket, basin or bowl);
  • warm (40-45°C) water (it will not dissolve in cold water; in hot water it will coagulate into insoluble lumps);
  • an object that can be used to stir glue (stick, whisk, mixer, electric drill, etc.).d.);
  • a tablespoon or measuring cup (an error of just 50 g of the powdery mass leads to complete rejection – the mixture is poured into the toilet).
  1. warm water is poured into the basin (bucket) in the volume specified in the instructions – no more, no less;
  2. the required amount of powder mixture is measured;
  3. the water is stirred until a funnel forms with a stick or hand (power tools cannot form a funnel);
  4. the glue is slowly poured into the center of the swirling water;
  5. in this way the glue is stirred for another minute after all the dry mixture is in the water;
  6. It is advisable to carry out further stirring with a mixer or a drill with an attachment – they will break up all the small lumps, which is difficult to do by hand;
  7. after mixing is completed, the glue is allowed to brew and swell (14-16 minutes is enough), during which time it will take on a working consistency – it will look like jelly or thick sour cream.

Expert finishers advise thoroughly mixing in an additional 200 ml of water because thick glue dries quickly. Thirty minutes after you begin stirring, you must add water. You will get water with floating jelly-like clots if you break this rule. That’s it; the finished glue is now usable.

Pasting instructions

How can you use your hands to hang non-woven wallpaper? Workflow step-by-step algorithm:

  • The room where the work will be carried out is ventilated a day before it begins, after which the windows and doors are tightly closed;
  • The height of the wall for pasting is measured;
  • Sheets of wallpaper are cut to size or with a tolerance of 8-10 cm;
  • Wallpaper glue is being prepared;
  • The place to start work is determined – this type of wallpaper allows you to start work from any place, but preferably from a corner, retreating 4-5 mm;
  • A vertical line is applied to the wall for gluing the first sheet a few mm from the corner;
  • The surface of the wall is coated with a roller or brush with a thick layer of glue slightly wider than the size of the trellis;
  • The first sheet is glued with the edge strictly along the drawn line;

  • Using a roller or wallpaper spatula, roll the canvas to the wall. Movements go from top to bottom, from the center of the sheet to its edges. When glue appears on the front side of the trellis, it is removed with a foam sponge;

  • The next sheet is glued end-to-end (beginners can glue wallpaper without a pattern overlapping – the seam is then cut with a knife and an invisible connection of two sheets is formed). If the wallpaper does not lie exactly vertically the first time or the pattern does not match, the trellises can be torn off the wall and re-glued – the material will not tear or stretch;
  • Excess glue and air are removed from under the wallpaper with a rubber roller. Since the interlining stretches a little, it is necessary to ensure that during rolling the edge of the fabric does not overlap the previous sheet. The joint is rolled with a special narrow roller. If the edge of the wallpaper still lags behind – the glue has dried, then the wallpaper is removed from the wall, and it is re-smeared with glue.

Because of the trellises’ wide width, issues develop in the corners. How should non-woven wallpaper be properly glued when navigating corners? Similar methods apply here as they do when dealing with narrow trellises:

  • The crooked angle is straightened out;
  • The corner sheet is glued with a 2-3 cm overlap onto the adjacent wall;
  • The next canvas is glued overlapping;
  • An incision is made along the seam. The cut strips are removed. The seam is rolled with a narrow roller.

But there’s a catch to this. Even though the cut portion of the trellis is only 15-20 cm wide, the wide wallpaper is not thrown away; rather, it is used as the next sheet when pasting the corner.

The article "How to glue wallpaper in corners" goes into great detail about the problem of passing corners.

How long does it take for non-woven trellises to dry?

After work, a lot of apartment owners have a habit of quickly opening the papered room to let fresh air in. This should not be done, though, as drafts will cause the most troublesome areas—the joints and the corners—where the wallpaper will peel off.

After working, how long should a room be ventilated? You must determine how long it takes for non-woven wallpaper to dry after adhering in order to respond. Non-woven trellises are said to dry completely in 12 hours by their manufacturers. Practice disproves this claim: wallpaper dries in 24-28 hours.

Be careful not to confuse this with the time it takes for non-woven wallpaper to dry. Up to three days may pass.

Finally

The material above makes it clear that there is no distinction between using your hands to glue narrow trellises and meters-long non-woven wallpaper. The only reason for the variations is the material used to make the wallpaper.

Any space can be transformed by adhering non-woven wallpaper to give it a modern and fashionable look. Careful planning and execution are essential for a successful application. Make sure your walls are dry, clean, and smooth first. For a perfect finish, this foundation is essential.

Cut the wallpaper into small strips when you’re ready to start, leaving a little bit of extra length for trimming. To handle the wallpaper more easily and with less mess, apply the adhesive directly to the wall rather than the paper. Better adhesion is also guaranteed by this method.

Align each strip carefully, taking your time and matching any necessary patterns. Work out any wrinkles or air bubbles in the wallpaper as you apply pressure to the wall with a smoothing tool. For neat edges, trim the excess with a sharp knife.

Recall that patience is essential. A professional-looking outcome can be achieved by following a methodical approach and regularly reviewing your progress. You can have beautifully finished walls that give your house character and charm by following these steps.
