What is Shingles

Fiberglass, bitumen composition, and basalt granulate make up the three components of flexible bitumen multilayer tiles. During the manufacturing process, shingles are divided into multiple layers, sintered together, and then arranged into bundles that are then sealed in film.

Strength, durability, non-corrosion, fungicide treatment, and resistance to rotting are all features of fiberglass. Because of the improved bitumen composition’s increased heat resistance, the material can be used without restriction in all climate zones.

Applying a layer of basalt helps shield against temperature changes, precipitation, UV rays, and mechanical damage. The ability to create distinctive color compositions is made possible by the non-fading nature of colored basalt sprinklers. The customer can select Shingles from 12 collections and 70 color design options based on his preferences.

Modules (shingles) are rectangular and have figured cutouts around the bottom edge; their arrangements vary based on the collection. To keep the modules from sticking in the packages, sand is sprinkled on the bottom of them. The shingles are also fastened to one another by an adhesive strip. A unique film is applied to the strip to protect it before installation. Because the shingles are installed in rows that overlap, the coating’s waterproofing is guaranteed.

All about the advantages

The material’s value to developers is not insignificant. In the more than a century that Shingles roofs have been in use, the following benefits have become widely known:

  1. Durability;
  2. Atmospheric, bio- and chemical resistance;
  3. Physical characteristics;
  4. Easy installation of shinglas roofing;
  5. Excellent waterproofing properties;
  6. Economical;
  7. Environmental friendliness;
  8. Aesthetics.

The source material’s resistance to atmospheric elements like wind, precipitation, high and low temperatures, and the influence of biological factors explains why the coating lasts so long. Shingles have exceptional insulating properties and don’t rot, fungus, or mold affect them. They also don’t fear corrosion or react negatively to acids or alkalis.

Physical attributes such as flexibility, low volumetric weight, and user-friendly size are made possible by easy installation.

Economical are less expensive than equivalents and come in a handy size, which helps to minimize waste.

Environmental friendliness is attained by having no negative effects on the ecosystem and the ability to recycle.

Aesthetics: You can customize each roof with a range of designs and a broad color palette of materials.

Shinglas Flexible Tiles

A little about the disadvantages

Among the drawbacks are:

  • narrow installation temperature corridor: from +5 to +27° C: at lower temperatures, the tiles must be heated to 20° C before installation; at higher temperatures, they should not be loaded to avoid loss of shape;
  • It is advisable not to walk on the finished coating;
  • the roof slope angle for laying Shingles is limited – from 12 to 40°.

Installation of Shinglas – preparing tools

High-quality styling tools required, excluding Shingles:

  • Hammer;
  • Knife;
  • Roulette;
  • Pencil;
  • Master OK;
  • Coated tape.

Along with flexible tiles, there are other handy items to purchase at the same time. The vendor will advise you on what is required and in what quantity to have the entire coating kit delivered to the construction site, saving you multiple trips. Thus:

  1. Lining material ANDEREP;
  2. TECHNONICOL mastic No. 23 (FIXER);
  3. Vapor barrier;
  4. Galvanized nails;
  5. Ventilation systems – aerators, exits, passage elements;
  6. Drainage system;
  7. Cornice strips, end strips, abutments.

The kind of flexible tiles, the area and layout of the roof, and the house’s height all influence the kind and quantity of lining material, drainage system components, and ventilation system components.

Preparatory work

The truss roof base is determined by taking into account the snow load in the specific climate zone, as well as the span and angle of inclination of the roof as specified by the house design. The type of system—hanging rafters, resting on a mauerlat, or a structure with a central support and struts—also affects the profile of the load-bearing elements.

It is assumed that there will be no more than 0.9 meters between the rafters; therefore, increasing the step would result in an increase in the profile of the beams, lathing, and counter-lathing, making it unfeasible.

Online calculators can be used to calculate gable truss structures, but if your home’s roof has a more intricate structure, you will need professional assistance.

Lathering is a little simpler; the step is estimated constructively to be 35 cm, and a calculator is also used to determine the profile. Ventilation of the under-roof space requires lathing. A vapor barrier material is placed between the rafters and the sheathing to keep condensation from getting to the solid flooring, which serves as the foundation for tiling. This article discusses soft roof pie.

Prior to putting in continuous flooring, brick or concrete vertical surfaces that extend above roof level (such as chimneys) must be plastered and primed.

There are several materials that can be used to make flooring, including OSB-3, edged boards, and moisture-resistant chipboard or plywood. It is necessary to lay the slabs in an offset pattern, with spaced seams, allowing a gap of 3–4 mm at the joints to allow for material expansion during heat. The maximum moisture content for boards should be between 15 and 18%. The convex part of the annual rings should be facing downward.

We join the planks with an overlap of 3-5 cm and fasten the joints after 2-3 cm. We reinforce the eaves overhangs with a metal eaves strip, securing it with nails in a checkerboard pattern, fastening pitch 120-150 mm. Here are further details about the other components.

In the valleys and overhanging eaves of the flooring, we install a self-adhesive underlayment:

  • In valleys – 1 m wide (50 cm for each slope);
  • On overhangs – by the amount of overhang + 600 mm from the inner edge of the outer wall.

A lining carpet with mechanical fastening is used to cover the remaining slopes from bottom to top. The vertical overlap of panels is 15 cm, and the overlap of horizontal joints is 10 cm.

We reinforce the gable overhangs along the lining carpet with unique metal strips that are fastened similarly to cornice strips.

If the shingle is laid using an open method, the valley needs to be reinforced: With a 20–30 mm horizontal shift, TECHNONICOL valley material is placed on top of the self-adhesive carpet. Bitumen mastic is applied to the lower, 100 mm-wide portion of the reinforcing sheet, and it is smoothed to the base. A metal sheet with anti-corrosion protection can be used in place of valley material. Nails are used to secure the reinforcing material every 20–25 cm, spaced 20–30 mm apart from the edge.

The final step in the preparatory work involves drawing vertical and horizontal lines on the slope to make the covering layer installation easier.

Shinglas: installation instructions

To achieve a more consistent color transition, you must combine five or six packs of Shingles before applying the top layer. The technology required to install soft shingle tiles is very basic:

  1. We start laying from the middle of the longest slope and work from the bottom up. As a cornice, we use a special ridge – cornice shingle, or cut ordinary shingles.
  2. Glue the bottom shingles onto the underlayment with a distance of 10-20 mm from the bend of the cornice strip and fasten with nails.
  3. We install subsequent rows diagonally.
  4. We install special exit penetrations communications, aerators and ventilation, chimneys.
  5. We nail a triangular strip along the perimeter of the vertical surfaces and glue strips 500 mm wide cut from valley material onto the mastic (300 for the wall, 200 for the roof), we put the edge of the strip into a fine and protect it with a metal apron.
  6. Attaching the ridge element, made from ordinary tiles and bent on a heated metal pipe Ø10 cm, nailing each with 4 nails.

A simple way to improve the longevity and visual appeal of your roof is to install Shinglas soft tiles. You can get a professional-looking finish that will shield your house for many years by adhering to a few essential steps.

Prior to starting installation, make sure your roof deck is clear of debris, dry, and clean. This helps avoid future problems like mold growth or uneven tile installation, as well as laying a strong foundation for the tiles.

Next, work your way up the roof, beginning at the lowest point. As directed by the manufacturer, place each Shinglas tile over the preceding one. In order to preserve the integrity of the roof, this guarantees appropriate water drainage and wind resistance.

To ensure that no tile is damaged, use roofing nails or staples to firmly secure each tile in place. Be careful not to overdrive the fasteners. Make sure every tile is firmly affixed and properly aligned by checking it from time to time.

Lastly, after installation is finished, check the entire roof and trim off any excess material. This stage guarantees that every tile is put in correctly and that any last details, like ridge caps, are put on for a polished appearance.
