Which is better: quartz vinyl or porcelain stoneware?

The selection of flooring options for your home can seem overwhelming. Quartz vinyl and porcelain stoneware are two common options, each with specific advantages and disadvantages. Gaining a better understanding of these materials will enable you to choose the option that best fits your requirements and way of life.

Quartz vinyl flooring is becoming more and more well-liked because of its water resistance, longevity, and simplicity of installation. This flooring option is more economical and easier to maintain than natural stone because it is made of a mixture of natural quartz powder and vinyl resin. Because of its durability, it’s a great option for homes with kids or pets as well as high traffic areas.

Conversely, porcelain stoneware is a class of ceramic tile renowned for its beauty and durability. It is constructed from finely ground clay and fired at high temperatures to produce a robust, long-lasting item that can handle frequent use. Because porcelain tiles come in so many different styles and finishes, homeowners can create a chic look that improves the aesthetics of any space.

Your individual needs, tastes, and financial situation will ultimately determine which quartz vinyl or porcelain stoneware is best for you. Although the performance of both materials is excellent, you may choose differently due to the variations in cost, installation, and maintenance. You can choose the ideal flooring option for your house by weighing the advantages and disadvantages of each.

It’s important to consider the advantages of both quartz vinyl and porcelain stoneware for your flooring, taking into account your individual requirements and preferences. Quartz vinyl is a great option for cost-conscious homeowners looking for a fashionable yet useful solution because it combines affordability, ease of installation, and comfort beneath your feet. Conversely, porcelain stoneware is ideal for high-traffic areas and people seeking a long-lasting, elegant finish because of its remarkable durability, resistance to wear and tear, and premium appearance. Which option is better, in the end, will depend on how important durability and aesthetic appeal are to you versus price and convenience.

Why compare materials??

Contemporary luxury vinyl flooring (LVT) and quartz-vinyl flooring are frequently contrasted with ceramic or porcelain tile. In fact, quartz-vinyl is essentially comparable to rival materials in terms of density, strength, and wear resistance. The heat resistance and temperature resistance of quartz-vinyl tiles are likewise on par with cutting-edge flooring.

During this period, however, the quartz-vinyl "holds" the room’s temperature, making it comfortable to walk barefoot while the porcelain tile, which maintains the fundamental characteristics of natural stone, consistently stays cold. This material is not as delicate as porcelain tiles, which can break easily; heavy objects that fall on them by accident will cause cracks or schisms.

Quartz vinyl flooring is regarded as a respectable substitute for porcelain tile, both aesthetically pleasing and from a practical standpoint. But it’s important to become familiar with the unique qualities that each of these materials has to offer.

Main characteristics

We will examine the benefits and drawbacks of quartz-vinyl and porcelain tiles in greater detail in order to help you choose the best coating. These materials are easily distinguishable based solely on appearance.

Compound

Porcelain tiles

This artificial finishing material has a strong, long-lasting structure and resembles real stone. Clay, feldspar, mica, and sand are all present in porcelain stoneware. It is possible to paint porcelain stoneware in noble shades that closely mimic natural stone by adding different impurities, such as metal oxides.

Quartz vinyl

Additionally, it contains quartz, or sand, whose volume can make up between 60 and 80 percent of the ingredients overall, depending on the brand and technology. PVC, plasticizers, pigments, and other synthetic structures make up the remaining ingredients.

The product is still very safe and friendly to the environment. There are two installation options for this coating: adhesive and lock. Elastic, soft, ultra-thin tiles make up the first type of coating; hard, dense dies with a high density make up the second.

Environmental friendliness

  • Quartz vinyl due to the fact that quartz vinyl is made from natural raw materials, which make up the majority of the material, it is considered and is environmentally friendly, resistant to fire and safe for the health of people, pets and the environment. Certification of product conformity makes quartz vinyl very popular for use in children"s institutions, sanatoriums, hospitals, etc.d.
  • Porcelain tiles do not contain any ingredients that could be harmful to human health. It is completely safe for people, pets and nature. The material is absolutely non-flammable and can withstand fire and exposure to direct fire.

Heat, sound and waterproofing

  1. Quartz vinyl maintains the temperature of the room/room, remains always warm, and is pleasant to walk on barefoot. This finishing material “beckons”, you want to sit on it and read a book, do yoga, or play with the children in construction sets, etc. The reduced thermal conductivity of quartz-vinyl tiles allows it to be combined with a heated floor system, but at the same time a certain temperature regime for heating the floor must be maintained (no more than +27+28 0 C). Complete tightness and solidity of the laid coating guarantees 100% protection from high humidity. The material also contributes to sound insulation, perfectly dampens the noise of steps, making them soft, barely perceptible.
  2. Porcelain tiles also have minimal thermal conductivity and are recommended for the installation of underfloor heating systems, which will be used not only as an additional heating source, like quartz-vinyl (with heating limitation), but as the main heating system. High-quality laid porcelain stoneware completely eliminates backlashes and cracks, thereby saving heat in the room, but remains cold. Waterproofing of porcelain tiles is unconditional. The material is resistant to water and other liquids. It can be used for installation in any room with the highest humidity. Waterproof 1-3% thanks to super high density.

Strength, density and service life

  • Quartz vinyl, depending on the type, has different strength and density. Tiles with adhesive laying method are flexible, elastic elements with a fairly dense, durable structure. The difference between locking dies is higher strength, density and durability. Their service life ranges from 20-25 years or more (with careful handling), while quartz-vinyl adhesive has a shorter period of 12-20 years. The density of porcelain stoneware per 1 m 3 is 1,400-1,500 kg according to European standards, and quartz-vinyl is 1,600-2,100 kg per 1 m 3 .
  • Porcelain stoneware is a hard, dense and very durable material. During its manufacture, a small number of pores are specially created, which eliminate the appearance of microcracks. And during the pressing process, the tiles become completely homogeneous without voids. Porcelain tiles under high loads and traffic guarantee the longest service life of up to 60 years or more! If handled carelessly, due to the fall of a heavy object or equipment, porcelain tiles may crack or split.

Installation features

Quartz vinyl

Even a novice can easily install quartz vinyl coating on their own. On a ready, level, and spotless surface, adhesive quartz vinyl is placed:

  • the tiles are selected according to the pattern and laid out on the floor, “trying on” the overall design;
  • I do the installation from the opposite side (and from the window) from the door;
  • prepare glue and a notched trowel;
  • the glue is carefully and evenly applied to small areas of the subfloor and the tiles are immediately glued;
  • smooth the surface with a soft roller, removing possible air voids and firmly joining the surfaces.

All flooring is installed using this method. After allowing the glue to fully dry, they reposition furniture and appliances. Castle In 1-2 hours, quartz vinyl installation is significantly quicker and simpler:

  • work on a prepared, clean floor base;
  • a special substrate is first laid out – ultra-thin and very dense;
  • lay the first row of dies – they are connected using a locking method to each other at the ends;
  • the second row of modules is also connected to each other at the ends, but first they are joined to the first row of tiles by snapping them on the long sides (until they click);
  • each die is inserted into the already laid one, at a slight angle of 30-45%.

With this method, furniture and equipment are placed right away after all of the tiles have been laid. You can fix minor surface flaws on a concrete or wooden base if the dies have a chamfer, but not larger than 2-4 mm.

Porcelain tiles

Strong, level surfaces are necessary for porcelain tiles; otherwise, flaws will cause the floor covering to break and disintegrate. Apply a unique glue (made of cement and binder):

  • for the work you will need a tile cutter, trowel, paint spatula or trowel with a serrated edge;
  • apply markings to the base of the floor;
  • use a trowel to evenly distribute the adhesive composition on the surface of the subfloor;
  • immediately lay the first row of tiles, pressing each element tightly to the adhesive;
  • place tile crosses to control the thickness and evenness of the seam;
  • use level and rules to control the level of the floor.

A layer of complete tiles is first laid out, and then areas, corners, and difficult-to-reach places where tile elements need to be trimmed are marked out.

Coating care

  • Quartz vinyl does not require complex care; it is enough to carry out wet cleaning using special detergents and soft rags, vacuuming. In case of careless damage, the damaged die is simply replaced with a new one.
  • Porcelain tiles are vulnerable in grout areas, where contamination is most obvious over time. Minor dusty dirt can be removed with a vacuum cleaner or broom. For wet cleaning, choose alkaline or neutral detergents and warm water with a sponge or rag. The addition of ammonia and window cleaner is especially welcome. They guarantee shine to the tiles and eliminate streaks. It is not recommended to wash porcelain tiles with soapy water; it helps create a film on the coating and can “trigger” the process of mold formation. Metallic and abrasive sponges are not allowed – they will ruin the glossy surface. Dirty porcelain tile joints require special care. Detergents are applied to their surface, left for 4-7 minutes and cleaned with a soft brush, then wet cleaning of the entire floor is carried out. Fat is removed from this coating using vinegar, mold is removed with a solution of soda/vinegar/ammonia. For fungus – bleach. Chemical and ingrained substances are removed with a solvent.

Color fastness

  1. Quartzvinyl. In the process of manufacturing quartz-vinyl tiles, the decorative layer, thanks to modern technologies, is reliably protected by additional coatings that are resistant not only to abrasion, but also to other influences – fading, slipping, accumulation of static stress. Color, texture, patterns retain their original appearance throughout their long service life. The palette of quartz vinyl shades is limited (there are no bright options) – the models have noble designs that imitate the colors of natural materials (wood, stone).
  2. Porcelain tiles. In the production of porcelain stoneware, the coloring pigment is added to the total “raw” mass. The tiles are painted completely and evenly, which ensures resistance to fading. The coating remains presentable and impressive for decades, does not fade or change color. Neither mechanical damage nor UV rays are scary for porcelain tiles.

Average prices in the Russian Federation for coatings

LVT

There are two installation options for quartz-vinyl, so the cost of the coating will vary. In the Russian Federation, the cost of premium tiles with an adhesive type of installation ranges from 1,660 to 1,850 rubles/m2, while the cost of locking models is higher, ranging from 2,400 to 2,700 rubles/m2.

Although models with lower quality can be more affordable (between 890 and 1,000 rubles/m2), the coating quality also declines.

Porcelain tiles

Luxurious porcelain tiles from reputable brands range in price from 4,600 to 6,800 rubles, which is several times more than quartz-vinyl.Newer, more costly models range in price from 11,100 to 12,500 rubles/m2.

Comparative table

A tabular comparison between quartz vinyl and porcelain stoneware will make it easier for you to comprehend all of the benefits and drawbacks of each material:

Installation: A level, ready-made subfloor base is necessary for all materials.

  • interlocking tiles have a very dense and durable structure;
  • adhesive tiles in the form of soft, elastic modules, durable but thinner.
  • quartz vinyl is 100% moisture resistant;
  • it is recommended for installation in rooms with high humidity.
  • minimal water absorption makes porcelain tiles best for use in places with high humidity;
  • tiles are resistant to water and any liquids
  • the coating perfectly absorbs noise;
  • no steps are heard on the floor.
  • the tiles perfectly retain heat in the room;
  • has minimal thermal conductivity;
  • takes on the temperature of the room, it’s pleasant to walk on the floor barefoot.
  • porcelain stoneware is recommended by manufacturers for installation with heated floors;
  • system heating is allowed from +29 0 C or more.
  • the interlocking type of installation is quick and uncomplicated – the dies are assembled into a single sheet using an interlocking connection (in 1-2 hours);
  • adhesive type of installation – takes more time, tiles are mounted on an adhesive base.
  • very natural, realistic texture;
  • repeats all the small details of stone patterns, wood patterns.
  • impressive, natural;
  • attracts attention and makes the interior luxurious, respectable.
  • if damaged, it is enough to replace the failed element with a new one;
  • adhesive modules are more difficult and take longer to replace.
  • the coating has excellent characteristics in terms of resistance to fading, mechanical damage;
  • service life of 15-25 years or more.
  • porcelain stoneware is resistant to scratches, abrasion, but strong impacts from heavy, fallen objects can damage it;
  • the service life of the tile is not limited, with careful use.
  • premium adhesive tiles have a high price;
  • locking quartz vinyl are very expensive.

Because quartz vinyl has a unique protective layer that also has an antistatic effect, it has an anti-slip effect even when spilled.

Conversely, porcelain stoneware poses a significant risk, particularly when damp (due to its smooth, glossy exterior). Apply a specific anti-slip wax to the floor’s surface to prevent this.

Matte porcelain tiles are non-slip and have a coarse surface.

What is better to choose?

You should take the area where the flooring will be installed into consideration when selecting a flooring type. There are various classes of wear resistance:

  1. Class 21, 22, 23 – for domestic premises, which includes residential buildings, cottages, apartments.
  2. Wear resistance class 31, 32, 33 – for semi-commercial premises. This category includes all public premises – government agencies and hospitals, shopping and entertainment centers, schools, libraries, hotels, etc.d.
  3. Class 41, 42, 43 – these are all production and industrial facilities with the heaviest load on the floor covering. They are called commercial. This includes warehouses, workshops, etc.

In domestic settings, such as bedrooms or living rooms (for small families), rooms or libraries in a country home, the floor covering with marking 21 that has the least amount of wear resistance is appropriate.

Installing wear resistance class 23 or 31.32 in an apartment’s most used "areas," like the kitchen, hallway, or bathroom, as well as in small to medium-sized offices and small medical facilities, is appropriate. Installation of the most resilient floor covering, designated 42.43, on highly trafficked objects will ensure a long service life.

Quartz-vinyl tiles are more frequently used in children’s rooms and bedrooms. Because it’s not too cold, it’s enjoyable to stroll barefoot on and not very dangerous. Using a range of patterns and hues will let you design a space that is harmonious. Models in class 21-22/31-32 are suitable.

You can also choose premium quartz vinyl with the best technical qualities and imitation stone or wood for the kitchen or hallway. In the unlikely event that liquid is spilled, the coating won’t get slick. Select classes 23 and 32–33.

The restrooms and bathrooms have quartz-vinil installed with the strongest rates. Improved functionality and durability are ensured by the combination of an underfloor heating system and 100% moisture resistance. Coatings suitable for classes 23/32-33.

Quartz vinyl is suitable for interior design in stores and cafes, eateries and movie theaters, fitness centers and sanitization facilities, and early childhood education facilities. Because of its high wear resistance, a high-quality coating will demonstrate its best qualities, give the space a long-lasting, visually pleasing appearance, and be both economical and useful to use. With the marking 32-33/41-42, the wear resistance class of coatings for public areas is chosen.

Quartz-vinyl 43 wear resistance class is the best choice if you need to equip a floor covering, for instance, in a workshop where wristwatches are made or chandeliers and sconces are assembled.

Although quartz-vinyl floor covering has superior technical qualities, it is significantly less expensive than porcelain tile.

Although porcelain tiles are a long-lasting flooring material, each tile has a unique "scale" of wear resistance:

  • PEI I and II – for minimal traffic and loads;
  • PEI III – for medium loads;
  • PEI IV – for high cross-country ability;
  • PEI V – for very heavy loads.

Selecting PEI I and II porcelain stoneware is sufficient to outfit a bathtub or toilet; PEI III is required for rooms, hallways, and kitchens. The PEI V option is applicable in high-load locations like cafes, restaurants, movie theaters, and shopping malls.

When budget is unaffected and using high-end, natural materials to create interior spaces is the top priority, porcelain tiles are selected. Porcelain tiles will undoubtedly convey status, give the space a solemn air, blend in well with the style, and add elegance and grandeur.

Ceramic tiles could be:

  1. Matte, it is used for installation in public places and technical rooms.
  2. Thickened, this is a technical version of the coating without aesthetic embellishment. It is laid in workshops, production facilities or warehouses with high loads.
  3. Polished and glossy. The tile is expensive, it is chosen for finishing the most “prestigious” rooms, premises, to give a special chic, to bring aesthetics to the interior.
  4. Glazed and satin options are highly decorative – appropriate for arranging rooms and premises with medium or high traffic.
  5. Lappato tiles – for premises with very high loads.

Making the appropriate decision is simple and depends on the characteristics and kind of wear resistance of a specific coating.
