White plinth in the interior of an apartment or house

A white plinth, also known as a baseboard, can add a subtle yet striking touch to a home’s or apartment’s interior design. Even though it might seem like a little detail, it has the power to completely change the feel and appearance of any space.

Plinths made of white are very adaptable. They go well with a variety of aesthetics, including traditional and classic as well as modern and minimalist. Their sharp, simple lines elevate any area with a hint of sophistication and elegance.

Apart from being aesthetically pleasing, white plinths are also useful. Particularly helpful in high-traffic areas, they aid in preventing scuffs and damage to the lower portion of the walls. Additionally, they can conceal spaces between walls and floors, giving rooms a polished, orderly appearance.

White plinths have a subtle charm that is worth considering, whether you’re remodeling your house or just want to update the interior. They might be exactly what you need to bring your design together and produce a polished, unified appearance.

The role of baseboards in the interior

The last step in finishing is to attach the plinth at the top and bottom of the wall. Additionally, it is dependent upon how carefully considered and confirmed the room’s interior is. Ultimately, a decorative strip is just a tiny ornament, a trifle. However, it is precisely that tiny detail that has the power to elevate the design of any room in the apartment—the bedroom, living room, kitchen, kids’ room, hallway, etc.—while also having the power to completely ruin even the most costly renovation.

Ceiling

When castle and palace owners started to consider the aesthetics of their rooms, ceiling plinths emerged. Ultimately, the elaborate wall decorations were not always in harmony with the ceiling, which was either painted or covered in gold leaf. The joint started to be covered in plaster moldings, which was a swift and significant solution.

Because of this, the interior ceiling plinth has come to represent the missing piece that blends the wall and ceiling decorations into a single design while concealing the stark boundary between them. Simultaneously, an additional characteristic of the ornamental strip was identified: its ability to visually alter the volume of hallways or rooms by enlarging or contracting them was contingent upon its dimensions. Artist-designers used this right away, compiling a set of guidelines for wall and ceiling moldings.

The principles that were developed in antiquity regarding the use of baguettes for interior decoration are still applicable today. Medium-sized city apartments are a good fit for light, smooth foam plinths because they softly draw attention to the ceiling decoration while evoking a sense of spaciousness and lightness.

Foam plastic trifles look very unappealing in high rooms. Large, conspicuous, status polyurethane or duropolymer products are required in this situation. Ideally, it would have a lot of decorative curls. They only become an important interior component in this situation.

White, white with cold tones, and white with warm tones are the possible color combinations for ceiling moldings. Simply put: white. It is hard to picture a red, blue, or green molding close to the ceiling. However, there are enough originals in this century who have an unusual conception of beauty. The ceiling molding can be painted black.

Floor

The floor plinth has slightly different functions. But the main one – to be an element of decor, to be responsible for the aesthetic perception of the rooms, no one took away. Although it is less significant. The ceiling plinth is all in plain sight, mistakes in the construction of the composition immediately cut the eyes. The floor decorative strip is mostly hidden behind the furniture. Therefore, it does not scream so loudly that it is not the owners" own child. But near the doors, your share of embarrassment from the fact that “I bought what was there” will have to be endured every time guests visit. And the homeowners themselves, before their eyes become blurry, need to put up with the lack of a finished, harmonious type of decoration.

Investing in a white baseboard removes the possibility of mistakes. The white edging at the bottom of the wall only looks ridiculous in two situations: either the apartment is furnished in a loft or hi-tech style. But even in this instance of style blending, a tall white plinth will take pride of place.

Principles for choosing skirting board colors

In a traditional design, the baseboard color is chosen as follows:

  • to match the tone of the floor covering – the classic, most common way to choose a color. The likelihood of errors is reduced to zero. Therefore, it is recommended for those who maintain conservatism in interior design. Well suited for solid wood boards, parquet boards, block parquet, laminate and linoleum. In this case, the baseboard should be the same as the floor or 1-2 shades darker.

You can identify the room’s contours in this version thanks to the color scheme;

  • color design of interior doors. But here is a strict requirement: the height of the plinth must be equal to the width of the door frames. This technique is most often used when it is necessary to fit a doorway into the interior, which in color does not match the walls, floor or furniture. Painting the frame in the same color as the baseboard will help in solving the problem;

  • color of trim – used when you need to combine the color scheme of the floor, walls and doors into a harmonious whole. In this case, the emphasis shifts to the plinth and platbands;
  • painted walls. Used provided that the color of the walls throughout the apartment is the same. The baseboard is chosen for painting and the house is painted with the same color as the walls were painted – otherwise it’s difficult to guess the shade. The method allows you to visually enlarge each room and corridor. The effect is enhanced when the baseboard is 1-2 shades lighter;

  • for furniture – the color of the baseboard is matched to the color of the largest piece of furniture;

  • contrasting. But here you need a sense of taste to combine colors and shades that are incompatible at first glance.

The aforementioned guidelines provide broad guidelines for selecting the ideal baseboard color, but they do not guarantee error-free selection. You either need a natural talent for design or a foundational understanding of the subject to know exactly what to use as a guide. Such a gift is not possessed by many apartment owners. And that’s alright. Not every person is gifted artistically or musically. Consequently, it is preferable to purchase a white baseboard if professional design assistance is not available and the owners are unsure about their decision.

Why white color

First and foremost, the interior skirting board needs to blend in harmoniously with the overall design scheme. It shouldn’t be a feature that stands out. Second, harmonize the hues of the furniture, walls, floors, and doors. Thirdly, visually alter the room’s dimensions by making one side larger or smaller.

The skirting board’s white color fully complies with these specifications:

  • can be combined with any color of the floor, walls, furniture;
  • In the classic style, it is perfectly combined with a wooden floor and ceramic tiles of light color. The decorative bar of another kalra will only spoil the effect of the repair work;
  • It is in perfect harmony with the doors and the floor of dark colors – it beautifully emphasizes the texture of the flooring;
  • gives clarity and severity of rooms with dark walls;

  • It looks spectacular with white doors (gives them an elegant look) and the walls of all colors of the rainbow;

  • harmonizes walls painted in rich colors with a dark floor – this is a classic American technique that is gradually taking root in Russia;

  • with dark doors visually reduces the volume of the room;
  • gives the room a royal status if there are columns in the interior.

When a white plinth is incorporated into an apartment or house’s interior design, it elevates the overall aesthetic by producing a smooth, seamless transition between the walls and floors. Because of its adaptability, it can blend in with both traditional and modern design elements while also giving the impression of greater light and space in enclosed areas. A white plinth is a chic and useful choice that can improve the appearance of any space.

Advantages and disadvantages of white skirting boards in the interior

When implementing white skirting boards inside your home, weigh the benefits and drawbacks of this style choice. White color merits the following:

  • versatility, allowing you to fit a skirting board with this color into any interior design style;
  • ability:
  1. visually expand the room;
  2. focus on the structure and shade of the floor covering;
  3. highlight the wall decoration;
  4. give the plinth a noble look, make it beautiful, even made of wood and MDF;
  5. refresh the room.
  • stylish simplicity that never loses its relevance;
  • a feeling of lightness, weightlessness – the white plinth in the interior is not able to “overload” it.

Minuses:

  • soiling, although housewives claim that dirt is no worse visible on a dark surface;
  • impracticality – the presence of pets does not go well with white baseboards;
  • regular maintenance is required (at least once a week) so that the surface of the baseboard retains its original freshness;
  • Need the same color fittings and fasteners.

White plinth in different interior styles

Inside an apartment, a white floor plinth complements practically any style:

  • classic. One of the types of style where the main color of the baseboard is white. Here you need high smooth planks made of wood or MDF;
  • Art Nouveau with its ornate shapes goes well with white polyurethane and duropolymer. The plinth needs to be high, with a stucco pattern;
  • neoclassicism – unlike royal classics, you can use plinths made of any material: wood, MDF, plastic. Even from PVC, although it is not produced white – mostly brown with variations;
  • minimalism involves a simple plinth with a smooth surface made of polyurethane and MDF;
  • Scandinavian style, with its triumph of white, which is based on the principle that the color of the walls, floors, ceilings and baseboards is just a background, a “blank slate” on which texture, decor and color accents manifest themselves in all their splendor. Here you need a high plinth made of plastic, wood, MDF.

There are design fads like loft, hi-tech, Provence, and country that make it difficult to envision a white baseboard. However, in a mixed-style composition, which deviates from the standards, the white board at the base of the wall appears appealing.

Rules for interior design with white baseboards

White baseboards have the power to either accentuate a home’s or apartment’s style direction or reverse all previous design efforts:

  1. White or gray flooring requires expensive, dazzling white skirting boards. Here, plastic in any form can spoil the impression – we should not forget that such “little things” shape the effect of interior design.
  2. Doors in light colors with a white baseboard visually increase the volume of the room with dark floors and light (beige) walls. But in large rooms this combination is not entirely successful – the feeling of comfort disappears. It is almost impossible to recreate coziness using different design techniques. This combination is most suitable for a modern office, although it is extremely rare there.
  3. Brightly colored, richly toned walls go well with white baseboards, which enhance the depth of color. This option is good for all rooms except the bedroom and children"s room (the combination of colors excites and prevents you from falling asleep). More relaxed finishing options are needed here.
  4. If a large room puts psychological pressure on the owners, a combination of white baseboards and dark doors will help. The combination fits harmoniously into rooms with high ceilings, columns, and wide frames.
  5. White trim and plinth look gorgeous against the background of colored walls.
  6. The size of the plinth must correspond to the height of the ceilings:
  • in rooms with low ceilings (apartments in Khrushchev), up to 2.5 m, decorative strips 5-7 cm high are installed;
  • in modern apartments with ceilings from 2.5 m to 3 m, a plinth of 8-12 cm is needed;

  • For the lucky owners of apartments in old houses with high ceilings, which is typical for Moscow and St. Petersburg, wide skirting boards for the floor in the interior are needed – from 15 cm.

Types of white plinth

White baseboards may be:

  • wooden;
  • from MDF;
  • plastic – made of polyurethane and duropolymer.

Wooden plinth

Wood has always been and is considered an elite material. Excellent decorative qualities and high performance attributes form the basis of the evaluation. Customers enjoy:

  • durability – the service life of decorative strips is more than 50 years;
  • strength – difficult to damage;
  • easy installation – glue or decorative nails;
  • beautiful appearance.

  • high price constraining sales volumes;
  • the need for regular painting – a layer of color on wood, regardless of quality, does not last long;
  • loss of warm, lively texture;
  • increased sensitivity to changes in humidity – constantly “breathes”, either swelling or shrinking. Therefore, it is not suitable for bathrooms and kitchens, although it is not used there for other reasons;
  • mounted only on flat walls – lack of flexibility reveals the slightest irregularities;
  • no flexibility – cannot be installed on uneven walls.

MDF plinth

The only inferior material for MDF plinths is wood. However, white paint destroys wood’s natural texture. Because of this, a painted MDF plank is less expensive and retains wood’s aesthetic appeal and functional qualities.

The advantages are striking:

  • the appearance is solid, representative, and cannot be immediately distinguished from wood;
  • huge selection of textures and sizes;
  • resistance to temperature changes and changes in humidity;
  • flexibility, allowing installation of the plank on walls with slight curvature;
  • simple fastening method;
  • easy to clean;
  • affordable price segment.

The fear of coming into direct contact with water in areas that aren’t painted is the only drawback.

Polyurethane skirting

The polyurethane plinth is a member of the plastic product category. Owing to its composition, the material differs significantly—for the better—from PVC and polystyrene foam, two other members of the group. Because of the range of sizes, shapes, and textures, the plinth can be tastefully incorporated into any type of interior design. Only an expert finisher can detect the substitution, even in classics.

On the material front, there are benefits like:

  • durability – lasts more than 30 years;
  • durability;
  • environmentally friendly;
  • easy maintenance — just wipe with a damp sponge or cloth once a week;
  • resistance to moisture (can be installed in any room) and temperature changes;
  • easy attachment to the wall;
  • good flexibility — can be laid on wall sections of any complexity, including columns;
  • can be painted — holds paint well.

  • high density, which is important for the ceiling, but does not matter for the floor;
  • high cost of 1 running meter.

Duropolymer skirting board

Just recently has duropolymer entered the market. It benefits from unusual qualities in this:

  • hardness comparable to precious wood species;
  • durability of ceramics;
  • mechanical strength of wood;
  • frost resistance exceeding that of ceramics;
  • water resistance, the same as that of the best plastics and ceramics.

Among the other benefits are:

  • does not deform when the building shrinks;
  • easy to clean;
  • holds a layer of paint well, unlike wood;
  • presence of grooves for cables;
  • environmental friendliness.
  • a lot is faked, even by large manufacturers – without having an exact formula, by trial and error, they look for a similar combination of polymers, calling them duropolymer;
  • over time, the joints diverge – mandatory gluing is required;
  • difficult to cut – you need a grinder or jigsaw.

Mounting methods

Most often, decorative nails or glue are used to install white skirting boards. Occasionally on clips (latches, clamps, staples). The only challenging part of using liquid nails for glue is priming the wall. Has to be dry, clean, and level.

It’s an easy process that involves gluing the back of the plinth and pressing it firmly against the wall for a while. A wooden plank is fastened with decorative nails. Nothing difficult either:

  • nails are driven into the plinth so that they protrude a couple of mm from the back side;
  • the baseboard is pressed against the wall;
  • holes are drilled according to the marks left by nails, and furniture choppers are driven into them;
  • plinth nailed to the wall.

A little trickier when using clips. This is how the technology is:

  • The location of the clips is marked on the wall;
  • Holes for dowels are drilled according to the marks;
  • the clips are attached to the wall with self-tapping screws;
  • the plinth is put on the clips.

The document "Installing skirting boards on the floor" provides a detailed presentation of the fastening technology along with many photos and illustrations.

Advantages of a White Plinth How to Integrate a White Plinth
Makes rooms look brighter and more spacious Choose a matching shade of white for consistency
Works well with various interior styles Pair with light-colored walls for a seamless look
Easy to clean and maintain Use high-quality paint to avoid frequent touch-ups
Adds a touch of elegance and sophistication Consider different materials like wood or MDF

A white plinth can significantly alter the interior design of your house. It offers a clear, sharp finish that goes well with both traditional and modern styles. It contributes to the polished and unified look of the room by blending in perfectly with the walls and floors.

A white plinth’s adaptability is one of its main benefits. A white baseboard provides balance whether your walls are painted in soft, neutral tones or bright, vibrant colors. It draws attention to the room’s architecture without overpowering other design elements.

Another advantage is maintenance. White plinths are simple to maintain and can be updated with a fresh coat of paint if they begin to show signs of aging. Because of this, they are a sensible option for hectic homes where dependability and style are equally crucial.

All things considered, adding a white plinth to your home’s interior design is a wise decision that improves any room’s visual appeal. Both designers and homeowners adore it for its classic elegance and usefulness.
