Renovating an apartment or house always involves many decisions, and choosing flooring is one of the most important. The floor should not only be beautiful, but also practical, durable, and suitable for your lifestyle. Standing in a store, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the abundance of options.
Laminate, linoleum, parquet flooring, ceramic tile, vinyl, carpet—each material has its own strengths and weaknesses. Which is better: the naturalness of wood, the practicality of tile, or the affordability of laminate? The answer depends on the room, your budget, and how often you are willing to maintain the floor.
The most common decoration options are:
- Stucco. With this refined decoration, you can create interesting patterns, bas-reliefs, and other decorative elements that visually enhance the arched structure. Plaster. Looks particularly impressive and unusual. Plaster can have various pigment additives or stone chips, and it combines particularly well with other types of finishes.
- Parquet flooring
- Parquet boards
- Solid wood flooring
- Engineered flooring
- Cork
- 2. Wood-effect flooring
- Laminate
- Linoleum
- 3. Carpet flooring
- Carpet
- Carpet tiles
- In a narrow hallway, you should avoid large furniture, hallways, and dark doors. You can decorate it with multipurpose and compact options:

For Provence, rectangular structures made of stone, wood, MDF, fiberboard, or other natural materials are appropriate. Arches are also often decorated with floral ornaments or artificially aged.
Parquet flooring
These are small pieces of solid wood that are convenient to use where the floor has a complex configuration. The fewer defects in the raw material (chips, knots), the higher the quality and the more noble the appearance. But even wood with flaws looks rustic and cozy and has great design potential. Parquet flooring has an aesthetic appearance and can retain it for decades, provided it is well cared for.
Cons:
it is not cheap, especially the more valuable varieties. It is not moisture resistant, so it is difficult to clean. It is best to entrust the installation to a specialist, as well as the maintenance: the top layer will have to be renewed every year, and every few years this will have to be done with preliminary sanding.

Parquet boards
Cheaper than parquet, because only the top layer is made of valuable wood, while the bottom and middle layers are made of softwood. But it looks just as decorative, and its composition is completely natural and environmentally friendly. Heat-insulating material. Serves perfectly for 20 years or more without any special care on the part of the owner.
Cons: it is difficult to install, as it is laid on a substrate or adhesive (either glue or glue-free methods are equally difficult), and the top layer must be slightly renewed every few years to maintain its aesthetic appearance.

Solid wood flooring
Boards are loved by designers for their expressive texture; they are warm to the touch, hypoallergenic, and environmentally friendly. They will last for more than 40 years. They have good heat and sound insulation. It is easier to install than other wood coverings.
Cons:
cost – it is more expensive than parquet. During installation, you will have to buy expensive consumables (plywood, insulating materials) and hire a professional. It dries out, burns, rots, and is damaged by insects. Maintenance is as complicated as for parquet.

Engineered flooring
This is a two-layer construction consisting of a plywood base (birch) and a top layer of multi-layer veneer made from any type of wood, including exotic species. It looks great in interiors.
In terms of price and appearance, it is no different from parquet or solid wood flooring, but it has higher quality characteristics. First of all, it is much stronger and more durable. The main disadvantage of parquet and solid wood is that they react to humidity in the room, causing gaps and squeaks. Engineered flooring has a multi-layer structure (both plywood and veneer), so it is more stable and less prone to drying out.
It can be sanded and re-varnished many times if you want to change the interior. Unlike solid wood, it can be laid on underfloor heating systems. This material is longer and wider than solid wood boards, so the work is easier and faster.
Cons: the installation process is complicated, and engineered flooring is designed specifically for glue-down installation—this method is better, but the flooring itself is usually much more expensive than parquet, and the special glue is also not cheap. You need to be knowledgeable about the material, because the market is flooded with counterfeit engineered flooring.

Cork
This material is made from the bark of the cork tree and retains all the properties of a natural, eco-friendly covering. In addition, cork coverings have high noise and heat insulation properties, are non-slip, hypoallergenic, resistant to natural wood pests, and easy to clean (a vacuum cleaner is sufficient). The material is springy, and this orthopedic property will help people with spinal problems reduce the load on the musculoskeletal system. In terms of price, cork is an alternative to laminate.
Cons:
is vulnerable to sharp objects. It can be damaged by sharp heels or furniture legs. It is not visually suitable for all rooms.

2. Wood-effect flooring
Wood-effect flooring is serious competition for real wood. Laminate flooring is the main example. High-quality laminate flooring imitates the texture of wood so well that even experts find it hard to tell the difference.
Laminate
Laminate has a moisture-proof layer. This HDF board with a laminated surface is very durable and designed for heavy loads, especially if it is a class 33 or 34 material. Laminate is easy to install and quite durable (10 years). It is fire-resistant and does not deform from temperature changes. It is easy to care for and does not change its appearance over the years.
Cons:
to prevent squeaking and warping, the base surface must be perfectly flat. It can swell if water stands on the floor for several hours (if your neighbors spill something, for example).

Linoleum
Practicality and low price are the main advantages of the material. The impressive texture, imitating wood, looks quite expensive in high-quality materials. Of course, modern technologies allow any patterns to be applied to the top layer, but copying the texture of wood is the most popular option. Installation is simple and does not require perfect floor leveling. It is water-resistant, resistant to mold and insects, and easy to clean. Service life is up to 20 years.
Cons:
it cannot withstand temperature changes and rough physical impact. Not all types can be classified as environmentally friendly materials, which is why linoleum is more commonly used in commercial premises. In apartments, linoleum has long since given way to laminate as a more environmentally friendly product.

3. Carpet flooring
The material guarantees warmth and comfort in the interior. But is it good in terms of performance and easy to care for?
Carpet
It is made from natural or artificial fibers that are bonded with a latex base. You can walk on carpet without shoes, which is useful and pleasant, and it has high noise and heat insulation characteristics. The pile height varies greatly, as does the color, making the material very decorative.

Carpet tiles
Similar to carpet, but more convenient to use. It is enough to replace one tile to remove an indelible stain in the room, instead of replacing the entire covering. Easier to install than carpet, it allows you to work economically with complex floor configurations—there is little waste.
Cons:
in a narrow space, doors to rooms can cause a lot of problems when opening, so it is worth replacing them with sliding options. If, for example, the doors to the living room or kitchen are almost always open, they can be safely replaced with a decorative arch.

Interesting ideas and stylish details
In a narrow hallway, you should avoid large furniture, hallways, and dark doors. You can decorate it with multipurpose and compact options:
They are also called polymeric because they contain these substances in their composition. Although the installation seems simple, it requires the involvement of specialists: the mixture is prepared according to a recipe and poured onto the floor using a specific technology, often in several layers. There are many design options, including a 3D effect. This is a seamless material, so there will be no problems with joints and leaks. It does not require any special care.
Baskets, shoe racks, and small items.
the preparation of the base for a self-leveling floor must be done professionally, otherwise you will flood your neighbors, not with water, but with polymers that are difficult to dispose of. Self-leveling floors and their installation are not a cheap solution and are not suitable for every interior. Also, for comfort under such a covering, it is better to provide for “warm” floors, and this entails additional costs.

So, choosing a floor covering is always a search for compromise. There is no single ideal material for all occasions. Each option is good in its own way and under certain conditions.
The main thing is to honestly answer a few questions: which room needs flooring, how much foot traffic will it get, are you prepared to maintain it, and, of course, what is your budget? Only then will you be able to weigh all the pros and cons.
Don't chase after the latest trends or the lowest price. Take your time choosing — good flooring will last for years and create a cozy atmosphere in your home. Good luck with your renovation!
