The main types of liquid wallpaper differ in composition, technical characteristics, and price. Silk fiber-based liquid wallpaper is the most reliable. It lasts a long time without changing its original color when exposed to ultraviolet light. Therefore, silk liquid wallpaper is the most expensive. Silk-cellulose and cellulose options last less than silk, so they are cheaper.

Liquid wallpaper is sold in specialty stores in the form of a dry mixture or a ready-made solution. The solution is usually concentrated and colored. Water is added to it according to the instructions and applied to the surface. The dry mixture does not contain colorants or decorative elements. They must be added during mixing.

After application and drying, liquid wallpaper looks neat and attractive. The surface is textured, similar to decorative plaster.

Basic properties

Liquid wallpaper in an apartment is applied to a primed surface. It is not necessary to specifically correct minor defects up to 10 mm deep. The coating adheres perfectly to any material – concrete, metal, drywall, plastic. Liquid wallpaper can be used together with other finishing coatings.

Liquid wallpaper in interiors is used for application on water and heating pipes. A special insulation is applied to the metal base to protect against rust.

Color is very important for this type of interior design. Preference is given to traditional shades—red, yellow, and blue—each of which has its own meaning. The furniture is simple and conservative. Decorative elements play an important role – figurines, curtains with hieroglyphs, Chinese umbrellas. The room is furnished with utensils and a large dining table. The furniture is simple and even deliberately rough.

A good interior is not just beautiful, but also comfortable, cozy, and appealing. The world of interior design is vast: from strict minimalism to lavish art deco, from cozy Scandinavian style to bold loft. This article covers 25 different styles that are worth knowing about, even if you are just renovating. There are styles to suit every taste: simple and complex, trendy and timeless, budget-friendly and luxurious. The main thing is to understand which one is closest to you.

It is distinguished by its simplicity, embodying the harshness and coldness of northern nature, while also featuring warm colors. The main colors are blue and white. Natural materials are used to emphasize the harshness and coldness of the environment. There is usually little furniture, and the walls are painted white or green.

Add decorative elements, if any, to the container with water and mix thoroughly. Next, add the main mixture to the water and mix. The method for preparing the finished composition is indicated in the instructions. It is not always possible to use a construction mixer. Each package of liquid wallpaper is mixed separately and completely.

After mixing, the solution is left for 6-12 hours according to the instructions. During this time, the glue will soak up water and bind the fibers and other components of the liquid wallpaper. The result is a homogeneous mixture that is easy to work with.

The consumption of the finished mixture for decorative finishing is approximately 1 package per 4-5 m². Mix the required number of portions with a reserve. The unused composition can be mixed into a newly prepared solution. It is better to store the finished composition in a closed container. The shelf life is indicated on the package.

Coating application

To apply liquid wallpaper, you will need the following tools:

  • a set of plexiglass or stainless steel spatulas ranging in size from 8 to 80 cm;
  • metal or plastic trowel;
  • trowel;
  • paint brush or roller;
  • spray bottle or special spray gun.

Liquid wallpaper should be applied little by little, similar to putty. The composition is applied to the working surface with a spatula or by hand. Then the liquid wallpaper is smoothed with a trowel without much effort. It should be held at an angle of up to 15°. The required layer thickness depends on the composition, so refer to the instructions. The wall is treated in sections no larger than 1 m².

When applying liquid wallpaper, the tool should be moved smoothly across the surface in small increments. The direction of movement is determined as desired. By moving the spatula or trowel in different directions, changing the angle of the tool, you can achieve the desired background pattern. You can move the tool in a circle or along a curved line.

Problem areas—corners, baseboards, openings—are decorated starting from the corner. Then you can move the tool in the desired direction. When the entire wall is covered with wallpaper, you need to smooth out minor imperfections by running a damp trowel over the surface.

To create a pattern on a wall covered with liquid wallpaper, you need to use special trowels. They have a narrow blade made of transparent plastic. This allows you to carefully smooth out the fibers to achieve the desired result.

Apply a clear acrylic-based varnish over the dried liquid wallpaper. For the kitchen or bathroom, it is better to use moisture-resistant liquid wallpaper. They are applied in the usual way.

Save any leftover dry wallpaper for minor surface repairs. If you have excess solution, apply it to a flat surface and dry thoroughly. To reuse the material, simply add water and stir.

How to make the coating yourself?

To make liquid wallpaper yourself, you need to prepare:

  • waste paper;
  • water;
  • dye;
  • plaster;
  • pVA glue.

Any paper will do—newspaper, writing paper, wrapping paper, or cardboard. The main thing is that there are no traces of glue, metal staples, or stains on the paper, which can spoil the color of the working mixture when soaked. Ordinary cotton wool, sewing and knitting threads can also be used as fillers.

PVA glue and ordinary gypsum are added to increase adhesion. Approximately 200 ml of PVA is required per 1 kg of soaked paper mixture. Gypsum is more convenient to measure with measuring spoons for baby milk formulas. Approximately 40-50 such spoons of gypsum are required per 1 kg of paper. The final amount is determined in practice by preparing a test mixture and applying it to the work surface.

Dyes are used for coloring. They should be added to the mixture gradually and stirred with a mixer. The color should be darker than desired, as liquid wallpaper becomes paler when dry. To avoid making a mistake with the color choice, you can apply the finished solution to a small area of the wall.

Liquid wallpaper is an interesting and practical material that can transform your space. It combines the comfort of classic wallpaper with the plasticity of decorative plaster, allowing you to create smooth transitions and seamless surfaces.

Their main advantage is their tactile feel and lively appearance. The walls are soft, warm, and slightly textured, which adds a special atmosphere to the interior. At the same time, the material is durable enough to hide minor wall imperfections and is easy to repair in case of damage.

When choosing liquid wallpaper, it is important to remember that it is vulnerable to moisture. They are only suitable for kitchens or bathrooms with additional protection from a special varnish. In other rooms, from bedrooms to living rooms, they will reveal their full potential, giving the walls a unique texture and depth.

In the end, if you are looking for a non-standard, eco-friendly, and soulful solution for finishing, it is worth taking a closer look at this option. It gives you freedom for creativity and helps you create a truly individual interior that will delight you for many years to come.
