What kind of manufacturer is this – Pergo?

The Swedish company Perstorp AB manufactured finishing coatings for rough foundations under the Pergo brand.

This Swedish company started developing and manufacturing a wide range of multilayer materials in the 1950s of the previous century. After acquiring its primary rival, it rose to the top of its nation in the 1970s.

This brand’s initial laminated coatings were introduced to the public in 1980. It is important to note that this company’s concept served as the inspiration for the first laminate ever made.

The business expanded quickly, joined the US market, and started creating the first kind of scratch-resistant coating in 1995. Perstorp rebrands and grows into a multinational company with numerous divisions. Pergo is the new name.

The company’s efforts to develop and produce LVT tiles were short-lived under the new brand. Its flooring division was fully taken over by rival Mohawk Industries, an enormous American company, in 2013.

And the Swedish company, or what was left of it, had made a name for itself globally and started operating in the household chemicals market.

Currently, over 100 LVT coating designs are offered by American-owned Pergo in a range of build options. Regarding all the benefits, range of styles, and several drawbacks in our content.

Quartz vinyl certification

In order to get the fullest picture of professional opinions regarding the product’s quality, it is worthwhile to describe the product’s composition before looking at the certification documents for a particular manufacturer’s products.

Pergo continuously enhances the environmental friendliness of its products and implements technologies for producing renewable energy. Because of its own enclosed ecosystem, recyclable materials can be recycled without endangering the environment or igniting and releasing harmful gases into the sky.

There are three primary components of a floor, the majority of which are materials and natural elements that are readily available worldwide in sufficient quantities. Chalk makes up 40% of the composition, or slightly less than half; there are plenty of reserves of this element.

About 25% of LVT tiles are made of recycled PVC, which is a component of Pergo’s ecosystem for lowering emissions. And an additional 25% of the composition is made up of unrefined oil refining components (ethylene, a component of dirty oil) and PVC of primary production made from regular table salt.

Oil is a non-renewable resource, so the manufacturer is doing everything it can to make its coatings more durable. The vinyl flooring components of LVT floor systems have a 25-year lifespan.

In terms of the environmental aspect, it is important to remember that orophthalates are not present in the additives used in Pergo floor coverings.

Additionally, plasticizers—which are also added to toys and the food industry—are added to the LVT composition to give it plasticity. People using this kind of coating can feel completely safe.

Since most people spend their time at home, maintaining a healthy microclimate depends heavily on air quality. The manufacturer strictly controls emissions during production in an effort to reduce the amount of volatile organic substances released into the air.

Pergo vinyl flooring has substantially less volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than the EU standard A. They are classified as M1 and A+ for environmental safety.

It is possible to use production waste, such as sawdust from laminate flooring, when you operate within the same ecosystem. For their product line that produces quartz vinyl flooring, they produce thermal energy.

Coatings safety has the most stringent certification. Two top-notch certificates of environmental compliance:

  • A+ – document confirming low emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere. This designation is considered the highest category of quality.
  • M1 – confirmation of the highest category according to the Finnish quality standard. It shows the lowest emissions of harmful substances. Pergo flooring does not have toxic emissions or foreign odors.

The fire safety rating of Pergo vinyl floors is very high. All European standards for finished floor coverings installed along evacuation routes are fully complied with by them. They are compliant with the fire safety regulations for installation in meeting spaces.

The certificates below provide more specific information.

General Features

The following are general quality indicators and distinguishing characteristics of quartzvinyl from this manufacturer:

  • Full moisture resistance.
  • High wear resistance.
  • Increased surface strength.
  • Softness of coating.
  • Thermal insulation properties.
  • Compatible with underfloor heating systems.
  • Have a very low potential for slippage both in shoes and barefoot.
  • Easy installation, the ability to cover even imperfectly flat surfaces.

Coating decors are continuously being improved by experts, and new collections are coming out more frequently. This kind of LVT PVC plank is ideal for any room’s design; tiles in the most natural decors are available. Both the patterns of natural minerals and the cuts of wood are perfectly mirrored in the textured designs of the tiles. Additionally, designs have been created into the textures of concrete and artificial surfaces.

This manufacturer’s quartz vinyl can be used to build the following types of premises:

  • Kitchens.
  • Living room floors.
  • Bedrooms.
  • Floor coverings in children"s rooms.
  • Floors in corridors and hallways.
  • Staircases in attics.
  • Floors and stairs in basements and semi-basements.
  • Home and industrial offices.

Two categories of wear resistance are indicated on the products:

  • Class 32 for home use.
  • Class 33 for use in commercial areas.

Three thicknesses of LVT coatings are produced in PVC segments:

The floor segments are rated 6 out of 8 for enhanced UV resistance and a high slip resistance class. Quartz vinyl is suitable for all common subfloor heating systems, including electric and water-based ones.

After actively using chairs with casters, Pergo products do not delaminate, and there is also no damage after moving furniture around. The nice thing about Pergo’s quartz vinyl is that it can be taken apart and put back together in a different space by first adjusting the measurements.

This PVC coating is free of cadmium and other heavy metals, in contrast to some of its "classmates." It should be noted that classes 1A and 1B toxic substances, carcinogens, and mutagens are completely absent. Products for flooring emit very little smoke, and no distinct smell is detected.

LVT tile segments from Pergo will last the specified warranty period, which is up to 25 years of product service, if you follow the care and cleaning instructions. Additionally, a moist cotton cloth can be used to remove this kind of quartz vinyl with ease and convenience, even with its rough texture.

Furthermore, quartz vinyl décor virtually retains its color even after washing with water. It’s also important to pay attention to the locking mechanism, which, similar to all other Unilin products, consistently keeps moisture on the outside and keeps it from leaking inside.

For certain kinds of planks, the excellent heat-insulating qualities of this kind of PVC coating can be enhanced by adding more substrates.

The total products are separated into two sizable groups, which are:

  • Pergo Rigid Click.
  • Pergo Flex Click and Flex Glue.

To obtain a more comprehensive view, it is important to take into account the layer-by-layer composition of these and other plate elements.

Flex Click and Flex Glue

This kind of element consists of five layers, each of which serves a specific purpose and gives the products a composite set that enables them to fulfill the coating’s stated properties.

  • The first layer is a vinyl backing, it allows all floor elements assembled into a single system to withstand high impact loads. Therefore it has a very high level of stability.
  • The second layer from the bottom is fiberglass. This element allows you to develop and produce products that have increased resistance to plastic deformation. Fiberglass prevents the tile from breaking or bending even when high pressure is applied to it.
  • The third layer is represented by a high -quality vinyl. It has increased resistance not only to indentation, but also to point impact loads.
  • The fourth layer from the bottom is considered to be decorative PVC, which completely reflects the texture of wood or other decors. And also a high-quality pattern has good protection from ultraviolet rays, including solar ones.
  • The topmost protective layer is called Superior Protective, it makes it possible to protect the aesthetic and mechanical components of the floor elements.

Rigid Click

This kind of LVT flooring has all of its components in a four-layer format, and it is installed only through an assembly process that involves locks. It is important to differentiate these product layers.

  • Composite, rigid base. It allows you not to level the subfloor in an ideal horizontal plane and withstands high loads of both point and plane nature.
  • After it, the second layer with the bottom laid a flexible vinyl element that allows you to remove excess sound when moving on the floor and has cosmic properties that betray heat, softness and comfort to the owner of the room.
  • Next comes the decorative layer, as a visual element of perception for a particular collection. This layer allows you to effectively resist ultraviolet radiation and is the “face” of the selected type of collection.
  • The topmost type is called the same as the first group of products and is responsible for the safety of the decorative coating; its resistance to scratching and squeezing. The Superior Protective layer reliably protects the top of the elements from constant movement of both furniture and people on it.

Products made of quartz vinyl come in a range of sizes. They also vary in the kind of assembly. Many decorations are put together to form a lock; some are put together by using adhesives to glue them to the subfloor. Three different formats are available for LVT coating planks:

  • Medium board.
  • Short slats.
  • Tile products.

Assembly and installation work

These kinds of adviceal materials work well as a manual for installing any kind of covering that has been fitted into a lock from the Rigid Click collection. This kind of coating is intended only for subfloors that are heated, ideally between +18 and +30 degrees Celsius. The room must be at least +5 degrees Celsius to be installed.

Installation in trailers, solariums, and temporary buildings (gazebos and open terraces) is not recommended. Additionally, in all kinds of cold places. There is no way to restrict the floor’s freedom of movement; any heavy object placed on top of the covering will act as a wall. Regarding this, the manufacturer advises carrying and mounting all heavy objects on the floor before beginning the installation process.

If installing heated items on the floor surface is required, the manufacturer suggests positioning the heat radiation device on the protective plate first, followed by arranging the LVT panel placement around it while considering the thermal gap.

Heavy interior objects should be able to pass through floors without creating gaps or allowing the plank locks to open. Any stationary items in the space must have an expansion gap around them.

This kind of LVT tile should never be "tightly" fixed to the surface with the use of additional fasteners.

Three steps are involved in installation:

  • Preparing the surface of the rough base.
  • Installation Procedures.
  • Finishing of the coating.
Preparing the rough foundation

The quality of the base preparation for the new coating determines how the floor assembly turns out. In the event that the test results indicate that the base is not suitable for installation, preparation measures must be taken.

It is crucial to keep in mind that an uneven foundation will undoubtedly leave a comparable mark on the completed floor covering and lead to the development of disparities between the components. The following is the installation order:

  1. Make sure that the subfloor is clean and stable, and also check that there are no traces of chemicals or grease stains.
  2. Thoroughly clean the work surface and remove dust.
  3. Remove old skirting boards.
  4. Eliminate all unevenness and depressions in the subfloor.
  5. Grout joints between tiles and all similar types of base irregularities more than 5 mm wide and more than 2 mm deep must be leveled.
  6. All irregularities of more than 4mm over a 2-meter segment must also be eliminated.
  7. Lumps are removed with a scraper or sandpaper.
  8. In most cases, I use a self-leveling mixture to level out floor defects, but to use it it is worth performing priming manipulations with the old subfloor.

It is necessary to inspect a wooden base for mold and rot before beginning any installation work. Furthermore, no evidence of insect lesions should be present. The wooden base is taken off and the draft is organized if there is even the slightest suspicion of the aforementioned factors.

The floors are strengthened if the inspection process reveals no issues (so that they do not play under weight). Next, see if the moisture content of the wooden base is more than 10%.

When laying on concrete bases, it’s important to check the draft floor’s moisture content, which shouldn’t be higher than:

  1. For unequipped heating grounds:
  2. For cement screed 2.5% by cm and 75% according to the RH method.
  3. For anhydritic coatings by cm – 0.5%, and according to the RH method – 50%.
  4. For the ground floor equipped with systems:
  5. For cement screed 1.5% cm /60% RH.
  6. For anhydrite bases 0.3% CM / 40% RH.

Without fail, humidity needs to be monitored and recorded.

A freshly poured screed of cement mortar dries at a rate of 10 mm per week, with a maximum thickness of 40 mm. The concrete subfloor’s drying time should be doubled if it is thicker than 4 centimeters.

Must remember:

  • When using this type of floor with water floor systems, the room temperature should be ensured at 18-27 degrees Celsius, both during installation and for the next two days.
  • It is prohibited to use this type of quartz vinyl with heating systems that heat it above 27 degrees.
  • It is also prohibited to use this type of LVT coating with heating systems on foil.
  • For installation you will need a certain set of tools, more on this later in the article.
  • Before installation, it is necessary to check all floor elements for integrity and color variations. Do not use tiles of the same tone next to each other, as well as structural elements with broken or deformed locks.
Installation of LVT panels
  1. Carefully take the dimensions of the room before laying, namely the length and width (this is especially important when using elements with patterns. In addition, you need to make sure that the outermost row to assemble is not too narrow. In the case where the outer row is less than 50 mm, it is necessary to make it the same size as the lighthouse row (the first to be laid).
  2. If it is necessary to use a backing for installation, it must be laid along the long side of the element, adding as needed during the assembly of the floor covering. Adjacent rows of the substrate are connected to each other with thin adhesive tape in order to avoid layer overlay.
  3. A substrate is recommended for this type of quartz vinyl. It has leveling and sound-absorbing properties. The substrate provides the necessary expansion and contraction, and also greatly facilitates installation. Recommended types of substrate are listed on the Pergo manufacturer"s website. Using very soft or very thick underlayment may damage the floor.
  4. During installation, you need to ensure that the packages of elements do not intersect, otherwise you will end up with many monochromatic elements, and the picture will differ from the one planned by the collection.
  5. You need to make sure that the ends of the joints of two adjacent rows do not coincide; it is best to lay each row with an offset of approximately 300 mm. The planks must be laid in random order so that the cuttings do not lie next to each other. Following a random installation order will give the floor a natural and natural look.
  6. The planks are cut by laying them face up using a special tool, a knife for vinyl coverings. To trim, mark a straight line on the bar and use a knife to make a deep cut on the surface. The plank does not need to be cut right through. After the plank is cut, it must be broken with both hands. In some cases, the plank needs to be cut. When cutting, the plank is laid with its face or back side (depending on the type of hacksaw), this way a more even and accurate cut is obtained.
  7. This type of quartz vinyl allows you to independently choose where to start the assembly. It is worth choosing the styling in the simplest way. Patented Uniclic locking system allows installation for both right-handed and left-handed users.
  8. The first plank that will be laid in the lighthouse row is cut at the locks, on the long and short sides along the wall. Then remove the lock on the long side of each segment of the beacon row. This is necessary to organize a temperature gap.
  9. To facilitate installation, the first three rows are first assembled in the center of the room, and then pushed towards the wall.
  10. Install spacers.
  11. A rope is pulled along the laid rows parallel to the laid planks and, if necessary, the rows are leveled under it.

There should be approximately 8 mm of temperature difference between the product segments and the room’s fixed elements.

One of two approaches is used to complete the installation:

  1. It is recommended to use a corner assembly. The short edge of the mounted strip is inserted into the short edge of the already mounted panel, after which the strip is raised, which will be placed at an angle of 20 to 30 degrees. When assembly is performed using this method, the previously laid tiles in the row will also rise because they are connected by short edges. Place both hands on either side of the connection and pull the long side of the assembly towards you. After which the panel snaps into place.
  2. There is a second method of laying this type of flooring. You can insert ridges into grooves or overlay grooves on ridges. This method is the most common and also the simplest.

If none of the methods work, you can assemble it with a hammer; however, you should not hammer it together in one blow as this could damage the lock. Tapping panels for collection must be done evenly.

Before laying the next panel, you must ensure that the previous one is identical and free of cracks.

The same procedure is used for installation in each subsequent row. Conveniently perches on pre-assembled floor components.

Finishing the collected coating
  • At the end of the assembly, remove the struts set to organize the temperature gap.
  • The temperature seam is not filled in rooms that are not in the zone of high humidity. To organize a completely waterproof layer, in the “wet rooms”, the temperature gap is filled with sealant and plastic seal recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Mount the skirting board to the wall. It is forbidden to attach the skirting board to the floor, this will not allow to ensure free passage of flooring.
  • Install thresholds and docking strips, by the method recommended by the manufacturer.

Assembly and installation

This particular kind of lockable quartz vinyl is not meant to be installed on unheated spaces like vans, trailers, and floating vessels. Six degrees Celsius should be the minimum room temperature before assembly can start.

It is necessary to acclimate this kind of quartz vinyl indoors for at least 48 hours. It’s important to make sure the room stays between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius during this time. After the installation is finished, the same temperature is kept for at least 24 hours.

It is advised to lay the floor on a specific substrate labeled "Heat" if the temperature rises to 45 degrees or above.

As installing the tiles using the "free movement" method implies the absence of heavy objects on the surface of the covering, since this equates to additional fixation, it is worthwhile to bring and install all the heavy "islands" that have a lot of weight before installing the covering into the room.

Using elements that are laid on an adhesive mass makes sense in locations where temperature increases are likely to occur. Floor element installation is done exclusively by snapping; hammers are not used.

Five guidelines for installation:

  • The room temperature should always be kept at least 6 degrees Celsius.
  • It is obligatory to lay an expansion joint, the minimum size is 2 mm, recommended from 5.
  • Ensure free movement of the covering, in places where stationary, heavy elements are installed, provide a minimum thermal gap for such elements on the subfloor.
  • When laying on heated floors, leave an expansion gap of at least 5mm.
  • When assembling products into a lock, do not additionally attach the assembled structure to the floor.
Installation work

Three primary operational blocks comprise the installation of Pergo quartz vinyl:

  • Preparing the rough foundation.
  • Laying panels on the subfloor.
  • Organization of finishing work of the assembled canvas.

The types of preparatory work that are specified when preparing rough bases for the laying of Rigid Click correspond to this. Thinking of them as a separate block is absurd.

It is worthwhile to think about the processes involved in applying the coating segments. When it’s essential to assemble the coating on a rough base,

  • Make sure that the panels are laid in a chaotic order; do not lay many dark tiles or many light-colored tiles next to each other.
  • Laying should be done along the longest wall so that the light source runs parallel to the long side of the element.
  • It is also worth monitoring the displacement of each subsequent row, at least 30 centimeters relative to the previous one.
  • To provide additional strength to the floor structure, it is worth laying it without observing any ornament.
  • Before you start laying, you should take measurements of the room and align the first and outer rows in thickness.
  • Before starting assembly, it is worth installing the underlay over the entire area of the room. And also choose the most convenient assembly method. It is best to start installation from the left corner of the room.
  • It is recommended to use a special substrate from the same manufacturer. Do not choose a substrate that is too soft or thick. The underlay for parquet boards or laminate is not suitable for laying under quartz vinyl.
  • The system of locks on the floor elements that will be adjacent to the wall is removed.
  • An expansion joint is laid with a recommended width of about 5 mm (it is fashionable to use scraps as spacers for organizing an expansion joint).
  • The first plank of the second row must be inserted smoothly, with the long part at an angle of about 25 degrees. The bar is inserted with small pendulum movements while simultaneously pushing forward until it clicks.
  • After this, it is necessary to install the third plank horizontally, lift the laid plank, holding it with your hand from below approximately 25 cm from the edge. It is necessary to carefully press the joint between the elements from the short side. Apply pressure until you hear a click. Before you start laying the next row, it is imperative to check each joint on the short side.

Using a hammer or block during installation is strictly prohibited as it can cause damage to the lock.

The following sequence of action must be followed:

  1. The installation of each subsequent row is carried out in the same way as the previous one. For ease of assembly, it is allowed to sit on the already assembled rows.
  2. After the first three rows are installed, from the wall. It is necessary to check their installation. For this, a thin rope is pulled along the laid planks; the laid rows are aligned if necessary.
  3. Straightness must be checked additionally, on:
  4. Large areas.
  5. Areas of non-standard shape and size.
  6. Area laid continuously (without expansion gaps).
  7. With a temperature difference, on adjacent surfaces equipped with underfloor heating systems, it is recommended to use a docking profile, or make a compensation gap about 5 mm wide. It is also necessary to use the profile when the temperature in the adjacent room goes beyond the range of 18-30 degrees Celsius.
  8. It is strictly forbidden to press on the floor, fixing it with heavy objects, for additional “reliability”.

Device order

The collection is adhered to the surface using glue and set on an uneven foundation. Packages with LVT segments are transported, stored, and stored strictly horizontally. Segment storage vertically is not allowed. Furthermore, places that are very hot, dusty, or wet shouldn’t be used for storage.

The three stages of installation are the same as for any other type of coating and are as follows:

  • Preparing the subfloor and LVT elements.
  • Laying panels on the subfloor.
  • Finishing of the assembled coating.
Preparing the base

Two days prior to installation, vinyl panels must be allowed to acclimate indoors, ideally in a temperature range of 18 to 30 degrees. This temperature must be maintained for 24 hours following installation.

The final installation outcome is determined by the kind of rough foundation and the caliber of its preparation. It is worthwhile to do preparatory work if the rough base is found to be unsuitable for installation upon inspection.

If the base is made of wood, it must be checked for insect, mold, or decay contamination.

It’s crucial that the draft surface’s moisture content stays below 10% when mounted on a wooden base. Furthermore, the surface’s uppermost layer needs to be totally dry. Should there be a subterranean level, ventilation is a must. For every square meter of floor covering, the area of ventilation openings must be at least one hundredth of that amount.

For a wooden base, plywood that is at least 60 mm thick is utilized as the substrate. Plywood and rough surface are joined in the shape of a lattice; 150 mm is enough between nails in the center, and no more than 75 mm separates nails along the perimeter.

The following procedures should be considered when getting ready:

  1. Level the floor over the entire area of the room, unevenness is 0.3 mm must be leveled on each 20 mm surface segment. Proceed in the same way with all irregularities from 3 mm for every 2 linear meters of the base. Use suitable leveling compounds followed by priming the coating.
  2. The coating moisture is measured, the moisture content in the cement screed should be:
  3. For the draft floor of the base unequipped by heating: for cement screed 2.5% by the method of cm; For anhydritic coatings by cm – 0.5%.
  4. For the grounds for the floor of the base equipped with heating systems: for cement screed 1.5% cm; for anhydritic bases 0.3% cm.

Next, you must confirm that the draft base satisfies the styling requirements and that there are no:

  • Traces of fat and spills of chemical fluids.
  • Garbage.
  • Dust.
  • Old traces of glue compositions.
  • Inflows and cracks.
  • Dust.
  • After draft cleaning, clean the vacuum cleaner, after dismantling old skirting boards.
  • Lay out a “picture” that must be recreated without glue on the base (it is worth paying attention to the tonality. Do not lay a lot of dark or many light tiles nearby).
  • Also align the starting and finish rows in width so that they are at least 5 cm each.
  • Contact segments without adhesive mass, especially the first row (starting with a whole plank from the left corner of the room).
  • The segments are easily cut with a knife and then broken at the cut site by hand.
  • Having organized the glue-free laying of the first two rows, it is necessary to mark their border using a construction pencil on the floor. This will be the border along which you need to apply glue.
  • After the first two rows are adjusted with a step offset of at least 30 cm, they are disassembled.
  • Using a spatula marked A2, apply glue to the rough base (it is recommended to use the original Pergo brand adhesive).
  • The planks are laid on glue, their position is leveled. After this, they are pressed down and rolled out using a roller. The glue should be well absorbed into the back of the floor segment. Excess glue is removed immediately using a cotton cloth. Cleaning agents are not used.
  • The next rows are laid by repeating the same operations.
  • After the floor section is completely assembled, it is recommended to roll it with a heavy roller no later than 30 minutes after assembly.
Finishing work

For this kind of quartz vinyl, the finishing steps should be laid in the same order as the two earlier series.

Advantages and disadvantages

There are several characteristics of this kind of LVT panel that define its benefits and drawbacks. It is worthwhile to give each of them more thought and analysis.

Benefits

  • Increased elasticity of the panels allows you to work more comfortably.

  • It has a universal purpose and can be mounted both on the floor and on walls.
  • After repeated rolling of chairs with rollers, it does not undergo rolling out or delamination.
  • No damage to segments after moving furniture.
  • Has increased resistance to ultraviolet rays.
  • Compatible with all types of sub-base heating.
  • It has high resistance, to acetone, shoe cream, hydrogen peroxide.
  • Installs without additional backing.

Drawbacks:

  • Requires pre-installation without glue.
  • The need to prepare the base to perfect condition.
  • The need to measure substrate moisture.

Price

The average cost of this kind of quartz vinyl in the country is roughly 2,300 rubles per square meter for this kind of panel.

How to make the right choice?

Purchasing this specific material to arrange the rough base’s surface can be viewed as the first step in selecting decors from this manufacturer. and after that follow the following guidelines:

  • Place of installation (commercial premises or private household).
  • Subfloor (material, condition, presence of deficiencies that need to be eliminated).
  • Thickness of quartz vinyl coating segments.
  • Planned installation method, locking or gluing to the subfloor.
  • Price range comfortable for the buyer.
  • The need for monolithic styling over the entire surface of the room, or laying with a gap.
  • Color range and design of the coating, which should match the overall design of the premises.
  • Possibility of laying on or without a substrate.
  • Compatibility with the current arrangement of the base heating.
  • The size of the tiles, the most optimal for the selected room.
  • Abrasion protection class.

The abrasion classes of the various collections of LVT segments from Pergo vary, as do their respective properties. Additionally, while some segment types are glued directly to the base, others can be mounted in a lock. Segments with glue-mounted segments have very good markings.

Although the subfloor arrangement segments from this manufacturer have shown excellent results in "wet rooms," it is not advised to install them in rooms without heating. This quartz vinyl comes in an eco-friendly assortment.
