What it is?

Blinds are a kind of curtain made up of separate parts. This piece of equipment serves to shield the windows from glaring outside views and excess light.

A variety of materials, such as thin wooden planks, fabric strips for the frame, plastic components, etc., can be used to make them. Paper blinds are one of the greatest choices. Their benefits

  1. Low price. Paper is cheaper than thin wood without defects.
  2. Ease. This curtain can be hung on any window with virtually no additional fasteners required.
  3. Environmental friendliness. Unlike plastic or varnished wood, paper does not emit phenol, phthalate, or any other foreign substances.
  4. The ability to make them yourself with minimal skills. At the same time, using different types of paper you can achieve any decorative effect.

The primary drawback of the paper is its brittleness; it cannot be cleaned and quickly fades and turns yellow in the sun. Paper blinds usually need to be replaced after no more than a year. However, this disadvantage is not great enough to make one reject such a useful accessory.

Where and how to attach?

Numerous kinds of fastening exist:

  • On a window sash that turns. This can be done with glue, double-sided tape, and if wooden frames are used, then with push pins.
  • On the window frame – so that the blinds cover the entire window.
  • On the wall near the window, on top of the entire opening.
  • On a frame for curtains – for those cases when a heavy structure with a sliding mechanism is made of paper.

It is possible to fasten something else. Everything is contingent upon the manufacturer’s creativity.

How to make from paper?

Preparation of materials and tools

To produce, you will require:

  • The paper from which they will be made. Which one to use depends on your desire. Old wallpaper, newspaper (for making tubes), whatman paper, etc. can be used. d. If you plan to use thin colored paper, then you will additionally need cardboard for gluing from the inside out – it will help the finished product keep its shape.
  • End straightening scissors.
  • Stationery knife. They are convenient for cutting thick material under a ruler.
  • A long meter ruler – good for drawing straight lines.
  • Roulette. It is more convenient to take dimensions from the frame with it, rather than with a straight and long ruler.
  • Pencil for marks.
  • Hole puncher for making neat holes. If you are using thick paper (for example, a piece of wallpaper), it is better to take a drill or screwdriver.
  • Clothesline (nylon is best). The thickness must be selected according to the size of the holes from the hole punch. Can be replaced with a thin but durable synthetic thread.
  • Scotch tape – regular or double-sided.
  • PVA glue.
  • A long, smooth and even thickness knitting needle (for example, knitting needle). It will be required if the blinds are made from paper tubes.

Furthermore, some designs might call for rope stoppers and a wooden plank for fastening. Beads, figurines, and other decorative accents are optional.

Here, you can get acquainted with the steps involved in producing blinds as well as pictures of the final goods.

Corrugated paper

Phases involved in handling corrugated paper:

  1. Measurements are taken from the windows. You need to find out the length and width at the place where the structure is attached.
  2. Take a strip of paper. The width should be equal to the window, the length should have a margin of 40–50 cm for the formation of folds.
  3. The strip folds neatly like an accordion. You need to make sure that the elements are even and the folds are parallel to each other, otherwise the finished product will not look good. The master plans the size of the folds himself, but it is not recommended to make them less than 5–6 cm, otherwise the rope may tear the paper when pulled. The work can be speeded up if there is a long ruler with a width equal to the width of the fold – then an accordion can be formed with it.
  4. The ends of the accordion are aligned. If they turn out sloppy, they can be cut with scissors or along a ruler with a stationery knife.
  5. Secure the accordion with stationery clips and leave for 2-3 hours. This is necessary so that the paper remembers its shape and does not bend during installation.
  6. Using a ruler, you need to find the middle of the workpiece and make a hole in it according to the diameter of the cord. This can be done with a hole punch or drill.
  7. A cord is passed through the hole. It must be secured on top with tape or glue, and on the bottom – a stopper must be put on so that you can adjust the degree of opening.
  8. The structure is hung on the window (read about the rules for choosing and installing blinds on plastic windows here).

It’s simple to use: just raise the bottom edge along the cord to the appropriate level with your hand, then fasten it with a clamp.

Swag, or the rounding at the bottom, can be used to create blinds. The outer corrugated paper strips are then formed into a fan. The bottom lamella strip must be carefully bent in half, its ends brought together, and the sides of the resulting fan must be adhered to with glue.

From tubes

A stacked pattern created from adhered paper tubes is an additional choice for paper blinds. Here, thin paper that folds easily is preferable. A lot of people like working with newspapers because they create unique, lovely tubes.

The work process looks like this:

  1. The paper is cut into long stripes with a width of 3 to 5 cm. If this is a newspaper, then a sheet is cut across 3-4 stripes across. It is convenient to do this by leaning the sheet and cutting the folding with a sharp kitchen knife or a clerical cutter.
  2. The tubes are stuck on the knitting needle, starting from the angle. The end is fastened with a drop of glue.
  3. If the resulting stripes are too short, they can be increased by gently flattening the end of one and inserting deep into the other a few centimeters. With the ability to additional fastening, it is not necessary, the beginning master can add a little glue to the inserted end.
  4. The number of tubes depends on the height of the future structure. For example, for a window 90 cm high, you will need at least 170 tubes.
  5. Tubes can be painted or covered with acrylic varnish and let them dry.
  6. With the help of a long ruler or wooden bar, an even row of tubes equal to the length of the window is formed.
  7. Lines are drawn on the tubes along which weaving will be carried out. There should be two of them at a distance of approximately 10 cm from the ends.
  8. The blanks are carefully braided with cord. To do this, each tube is carefully wrapped in rope, and then the free end is passed into the resulting ring. The loops need to be made very tight – so that they are adjacent to each other. To prevent the knots from unraveling, they can be glued.
  9. When the cord has reached the end of the future blinds, the weaving is repeated, only now the string is carefully drawn in the opposite direction. You can use two threads, weaving towards each other.
  10. The procedure is repeated for the second line of braid.
  11. The ropes are painted, the resulting defects are glued and painted over.
  12. Take a fastening strip and attach three metal rings to it. Two are needed for fastening the structure, the third is for the regulating thread: it is placed exactly in the middle.
  13. To prevent the tubes from deforming during the use of the curtain, additional weaving is done. In this case, groups of 3–4 tubes are braided.
  14. The top tube is glued to the bar.
  15. A regulating thread is passed into the middle ring. Its length is two window heights plus a margin of 4–5 cm. The thread should cover the blinds so that the tubes rise inside its ring.
  16. A lock is placed on the thread (an ordinary button with holes of a suitable diameter may be suitable – such that you can change the length of the ring).
  17. The finished structure is attached to the window.

From wallpaper

They are created using the same methodology as corrugated paper:

  1. Roll of wallpaper rolls out. The required piece is cut from it – the height of the window plus 40–50 cm of margin for folds.
  2. If the roll width is larger than necessary, the strip is carefully cut along. If less, the same strip can be glued. However, this is not recommended – the joint will be clearly visible in the light. It’s better to make two narrow stripes instead of one wide one.
  3. The strip is carefully folded into an accordion. If the wallpaper is thick, you can use a cutter, carefully (not through!) cutting the wallpaper at the future fold.
  4. Holes are made for the threads. You can use, as in the case of corrugated paper, one central thread, or two, by puncturing holes at a distance of 7–10 cm from both edges.
  5. Threads equipped with clamps at the ends are passed through the holes. The top end is attached to the end of the blind or to the mounting strip.
  6. The product is glued to the fastening strip.
