About the material
The bark of the cork oak tree, which is mostly found in the Mediterranean region of Europe, is used to make technical cork. Portugal has an especially high concentration of it. For this reason, it leads the world in cork material production.
A tree that is 25 years old is stripped of its bark for the first time. The oak tree regenerates its bark and does not perish because of active regeneration. Nine years later, the bark is taken off once more. And every time, the quality gets better. About thirty times in a tree’s lifetime, the bark can be removed.
The bark dries naturally after removal. It is then crushed. After being compressed and subjected to steam treatment, the resulting granules release suberin, a binding agent. The granules are firmly held together by this natural glue.
Types
Manufacturers have been forced to search for different combinations of technical cork with other materials due to the ever-increasing requirements for the cork backing, or damper layer. Thus, you can find the following in the construction market:
1. Traditional cork backing, devoid of any artificial additives.
2. Type of bitumen-cork. Its distinctive feature is the application of two layers of various materials to kraft paper: bitumen on top and cork chips on bottom. When bitumen and cork are combined, the substrate becomes a superior waterproofing material.

Important: Manufacturers do not advise using this type of lining in residential spaces due to the bitumen in the composition.
3. Rubber-cork material, an elastic blend of synthetic rubber and cork crumbs. Due to its excellent waterproofing qualities, it is essential in highly humid rooms. It is a good structural noise absorber, in contrast to the two substrate types mentioned before.

Specifications
Technically speaking, cork material for substrates has the following qualities:
- specific gravity (density) – 180-260 kg/m3;
- tensile strength (tear resistance) – more than 2 kg/cm2;
- deformation under pressure of 7 kg/cm 2 no more than 10%;
- fire resistance – class B2;
- sound absorption – at a frequency of 2.1 kHz the absorption coefficient is 0.85. For other types of substrates it does not exceed 0.7. To be fair, we note that low-frequency and structural noise (resulting from working with a power tool in the house) noise are reduced to a lesser extent;
- thermal conductivity coefficient – 0.037-0.043 W/(m*K).
Price range on the market and main manufacturers
Cork backing can be found in many European nations. Their offerings are extensively available in the Russian construction industry. In Russia, there are joint ventures and production facilities for its production.
Please note that the prices listed are for St. Petersburg as of early 2020.
Portugal produces the cork that is most frequently found for sale; several companies that produce it go by the following names: Vintage, Amorim Group, Egen, Wicanders, and Sedacor.
The following thicknesses of roll substrate are produced by Vintage:
- 2 mm at a price of 150-168 rubles./m2, size 10,000 x 1,000 mm;
- 3 mm at a price of 180-374 rubles./m2, sizes 9,000 x 1,000 mm and 10,000 x 1,000 mm;
- 4 mm at a price of 260-294 rubles./m2, size 10,000 x 1,000 mm.
For reference, regarding the large range of prices for Vintage 3 mm cork backing, it was not possible to obtain a specific response from sellers. It is typically sold for 318–374% rubles per square meter. It’s possible that the density of the material affects the price, but the packaging doesn’t include information about the density indicator or the roll’s weight to determine its value on its own.
Roll underlays Premium Cork, Cork4u, and Floorwood Portugal Cork are made by the Amorim Group brand:
- Premium Cork on the building materials market is represented by a 2 mm thick substrate at a price of 89-173 rubles./m 2 and 3 mm at a price of 189-243 rubles./m 2 ;
- Cork4u 2 mm thick costs 99-115 rubles./m2, thickness 3 mm – 180-230 rub./m2, thickness 4 mm – 248-290 rub./m 2 ;
- Floorwood Portugal Cork can be purchased at a price of 145-175 rubles./m 2 2 mm thick and priced at 213-320 rubles./m 2 thickness 3 mm.
Rolls that are 10 meters long and 1 meter wide are used to produce all kinds of substrates.
Furthermore, the market comprises numerous other companies such as Decora Poland, Ibercork Spain, Parkolag and Tarkett Germany, and many more. The price range is 49 to 576 rubles per square meter. The material’s thickness largely determines their size.
The substrate’s density is the second most significant indicator (the denser, the higher the price). Its cost is also greatly influenced by the kind of technological process used, the cost of raw materials, and the cost of transportation. As a result, there may be noticeable variations in cost for the same kind of technical plug.
Advantages
"The high price of the goods should be confirmed by the corresponding quality characteristics" is the golden rule of how any economy should run. - Not subject to rotting, well resistant to fungi, microorganisms and insects, does not serve as a basis for the formation of mold;
- Retains its properties at sub-zero temperatures;
- High level of elasticity over a long period. This ensures dampening of vibrations that occur when walking, good sound insulation of steps and protection of laminate locks when heavy objects fall to the floor;
- Easy installation. Even a beginner in construction can do the work with his own hands.
Flaws
Apart from their costly cost, cork substrates come with additional drawbacks:
- Cannot be used in wet areas (bathroom, kitchen);
- Requires mandatory waterproofing (does not apply to the rubber-cork type). This disadvantage is relative, since laminate manufacturers require waterproofing work before laying the lamellas;
- It often deforms and crumbles under the heavy weight of furniture, with, attention, a very small point of support, which leads to the destruction of the locking joints of the laminate;
- Does not protect against structural noise (drill, elevator, etc.).d.);
- Due to low thermal conductivity, it cannot be used in underfloor heating systems.

Laying features
On a floor screed that has been prepared, the cork underlay is placed.

These instructions explain how to prepare a wooden floor or concrete floor for installing a laminate (and, consequently, for laying a cork underlay as well).
A novice builder can lay a cork backing with ease. Nonetheless, there are a few crucial details that must be considered:
- Before starting work, the rolls must be rolled out and cut to the size of the room. The finished sheets should be left for a day in an unfolded position so that they are leveled and do not create waves and swelling when laying the laminate.
- The distance between the underlay and the wall should be 1 cm around the entire perimeter of the room. When cutting the last sheet, this requirement should also be observed. To prevent displacement, a 8-10 mm thick strip should be placed between the sheets of the wall and the underlay.
Be aware that some experts advise taping the underlay against the wall. Experience demonstrates that you can’t always keep the cork in its original position when using this method.
- The underlay sheets are laid tightly against each other, and the joints are glued with 5 cm wide construction tape.
- When laying sheet material, the second row should begin with a sheet cut in half to offset the transverse connecting seams. The third row should again begin with a whole sheet.
- According to the technology, the bitumen-cork underlay for laminate flooring is always laid with the cork layer down.
- In rooms with high humidity, special rubber and bitumen-cork substrates are laid.
- You cannot walk on such a substrate, as it is easily damaged. Therefore, it should be laid correctly according to the scheme: a sheet of cork lining, several rows of laminate on it. After this, the next sheet is laid, the seam is secured with tape and work on installing the laminate continues.
- After laying the second sheet of the damper layer, it is easier to work not from the screed, but from the already laid laminate.

What thickness is best to use
How thick should a laminate be installed on cork underlay? This seemingly straightforward question establishes the flooring’s longevity. The locking connections between the lamellas will eventually break if the damper layer’s thickness is chosen incorrectly. The following standards must be followed when choosing the substrate:
- Lining under lamellas with a thickness of 2 mm is used in rooms with a perfectly flat surface, where there are no differences in height. This material is not suitable for leveling even minimal curvature of 1 mm;
- A damper layer of 3 mm is used for lamellas of medium thickness, leveling differences in screed height of 2 mm, heat and sound insulation;
- A 4 mm thick underlay is laid under thicker and more expensive laminate panels. It also allows you to eliminate the impact of height differences of 3 mm on the floor;
- Substrate with a thickness of more than 4 mm is practically not used either in apartment buildings or in individual construction.
Be aware that the idea that a thicker substrate is preferable is essentially false. Under static loads from heavy furniture, technical cork measuring 5 mm or more quickly deforms and collapses (the lining is compressed by 1.5–2.0 mm, compared to 1.0 mm for thinner material). The slat locks break quickly due to this deflection. Furthermore, a thick substrate has poor vibration dampening properties. The floor vibrates when people walk on it; these vibrations can reach 2 mm, which severely reduces the floor’s durability.
